Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryPENNY (PAULINE) STEIN Suddenly, at home on Wednesday October 5, 2005, Penny Stein (nee Winick) said good-bye to us and hello to her heavenly home. Penny was born in Runnymede Saskatchewan on January 6, 1925. She was the sixth of twelve children born to David and Molly Winick and spent the first fifteen years of her life in the Roblin, MB. She attended school in Tummel, MB and helped on the family farm in the beautiful Shell River Valley. In 1939, when she was fifteen, the family moved to Winnipeg and for the next seven years Mom had a variety of jobs. In 1946 she married Ed Stein and together they had two children, Jim (1947) and Leanne (1952). She and Ed were married for forty-six years and Mom was devastated by his sudden passing in 1989. In the early years of her marriage, she and Ed lived mainly in the Weston area of Winnipeg. In 1960 they built a new home in North Kildonan and it was in this home that she lived for the past forty-five years. Her wish was to die at home and God said yes. She was very meticulous in everything she did. Her loved her yard and garden giving special tender care to her flowers. She also loved taking pictures and at every occasion Mom was there with her camera saying, Just one more. Dad often said that he regretted not buying Kodak shares along with Mom's first camera. Consequently, her home was filled with precious pictures. Initially raised in a Lutheran home, she started attending Zion Apostolic Church in 1944 where she taught Sunday School, sang in the choir and was a part of a quartet and later a trio with her sisters. For the past twenty years Mom attended St. John's Presbyterian Church where she taught Sunday School and participated in many groups and activities. Her special love was the Tuesday morning Bible Study group. From the very beginning Mom had a unique/special relationship with her mother Molly, our Grandma Winick. The depth of this relationship was strongly evidenced in 1964 when Grandpa Winick suddenly passed away and Grandma came to spend the rest of her life - the next fourteen years - living with our Mom and Dad (Penny and Ed). In 1973 Dad's Mom, our Grandma Stein, also came to live in Penny and Ed's home because Penny wanted her to. This willingness to care for both mothers was perhaps the strongest example of the dominating characteristic in Mom's life and that was her amazing ability to love and serve others. Mom had this ability all of her life but she consistently gave credit to Jesus Christ and her deep faith as the reason. When the family started attending Zion Apostolic Church, special crusade meetings with Albert Weisner were taking place and she made a personal commitment to Jesus Christ. For the remainder of her life, Mom had a passion to serve the Lord. Whether it was teaching Sunday School, visiting family, sharing with friends, interacting with neighbours, maintaining a commitment to a foster child, or dealing with her grandchildren, her love for whomever she touched dominated the relationship. Hugs, prayers, tears of sorrow or joy were all a reflection of her love and willingness to serve others. Coupled with this ability to love was Mom's passion for her family both immediate and extended. Continual contact with siblings, cousins, distant nieces and nephews marked her daily life. Hours were spent sharing and listening and reminding whomever she was talking to that they would be in her prayers. Mom also inspired everyone with how she handled her personal difficulties. When Dad died she got her driver's license at age sixty-five. She survived two quadruple bypasses, the last one sixteen years ago, brain and liver surgery and recently had a pace maker implanted. Her resilience was remarkable. In all of this her faith was unshaken and she maintained a positive attitude towards life. Her children and grandchildren have suffered a grievous loss but Mom, Nan will be treasured in our hearts forever! Penny will be especially missed by Doris, her life-long friend of sixty-two years, as well as her dear friend Jackie. She was predeceased by her parents David and Molly, her husband Ed, brothers Dan and Dave and sisters Mary, Anne, and Hilda. She is survived by her son Jim (Lynette), daughter Leanne (Geoff Stokes) and grandchildren Ashley, Reshal, Greg, Michael, Jillian, sisters Amy with whom she was especially close, Molly, Lydia, Alma, and brothers Richard and Robert. Mom was dearly loved and will be deeply missed. Our hearts have been touched forever. Her love is our legacy. Thanks Mom. A celebration service of Penny's life will be held on Tuesday, October 11 at St. John's Presbyterian Church, 251 Bannerman Ave. The service will take place at 10:30 a.m. followed by interment at Brookside Cemetery. Everyone is invited to a reception at the Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main St, immediately after. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
