PAUL A. FORTIER Died peacefully after a long illness. He was the beloved father of Rose, Luc, Marc and Jacques, and the loving husband of Penny Gilbert. He was predeceased by his parents Alice and Charles Fortier. He leaves to mourn his loss his sister Rosemary Halford, brother Charles Fortier, sisters-in-law Joanne Leussing, Gail Johnson, Pat Turk, and brothers-in-law John and Chris Gilbert, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Paul earned his BA at the University of Toronto, and MA and PhD degrees at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He taught French language and literature at the University of Manitoba for more than 30 years. In 1993, he was named Distinguished Professor of the University. The author of several books and many scholarly publications, he was the recipient of numerous research grants, and a member of many national and international academic associations. Paul was an avid gardener, world traveller, and wine connoisseur. The funeral will take place at St. Ignatius Church on Tuesday, October 18 at 1:00 p.m. Visitation will take place Monday, October 17 at St. Paul's College at 7:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Paul's name to St. Paul's College at the University of Manitoba.
