C. JOAN BRIAND (nee TUTTON) (FORMERLY INNESS) January 20, 1941 - October 18, 2005 It is with immeasurable sadness that our family announces the passing of C. Joan Briand on Tuesday, October 18, 2005, at Riverview Health Centre, after a courageous battle with cancer. Joan will be remembered by her loving husband Richard of 22 years; her daughters, Jane (Brent, Sr), Cindy (Miles), Hayley; son Noel (Lori); and Darin. Mum had many cherished memories spent with her grandchildren, Brent, Jr (Jodi), Adam, Ari and little Noah. Also included are cousins, Sue (Brian) and the rest of her extended family in Oxford, England. Joan will also be sadly missed by her best friend Barb and family; as well as numerous relatives and friends. Joan had a special knack of touching so many people's lives and making friends along the way. Born in Bloemfontein, South Africa on January 20, 1941, she moved to England as a child. Joan spent many years there until immigrating to Canada with her family in 1970. A devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend, she always enjoyed planning and entertaining our family gatherings, including Alan Inness (Lynn) in their celebrations. Of Joan's many passions, she enjoyed travelling especially later in life with husband and soul-mate Richard (jet-setting to Zihuatanejo, England and Vancouver). Joan enjoyed pampering herself and looking her best. She was also an avid reader and enjoyed trips to the local library. Her other interests included sewing, shopping and playing games on the computer. Mum was also an amazing cook. In her last days, she enjoyed playing backgammon with family friend Nate. Joan spent all her life taking care of her family and sacrificed so much for all of us. We were her world and she ours. She also had a special place in her heart for her cats, Cleo and Charlie, as well as all other creatures alike. Above all, Joan had a passion for people. Her blunt wit and amazing charm compelled most she met to fall in love with her very nature. Nana - October 18, 1993 Enjoy your tea for two. The celebration of Joan's life will be held Friday, October 21 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Charles Roman Catholic Parish, 320 St. Charles St. with viewing at 1:15 p.m. There will be a tribute and tea following the service. The family would like to extend a special thanks to the supportive staff at Riverview Health Centre, as well as Dr. L. Henderson, Dr. Liu and the Hospice and Palliative Care of Manitoba for their dedication, compassion and support. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Joan's memory to CancerCare Manitoba, ON109-675 McDermot Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3E 0V9 or Winnipeg Humane Society, 5 Kent St., Winnipeg, MB R2L 1X3. You are forever in our hearts. Until we meet again. BARDAL FUNERAL HOME CREMATORIUM 843 Sherbrook Street, 774-7474 Condolences: www.bardal.ca

I can honestly say, we could read between the lines. She often spoke to me in a language that no-one else could. It was stern and to the point and only her and I will know really the message. I love you...and always will...I understand what you want in life for your loved ones....if there is a winner in this world ..... it's you baby ...it's you. - Posted by: Roxanne Nachuk (Friend) on: Nov 09, 2005

Mum, Thank you. Thank you for teaching me to be myself, and to never settle, give up, or look back. Thank you for bringing my family into my life, and for being the rock that we all leaned on, and still do. Thank you for encouraging me to stick up for what I believe in, and to speak out against what I don't. Thank you for being the most prominent presence in my life. I am eternally grateful. I will love you til the end of my days and far, far beyond. You mean everything to me. Your Daughter, Hayley - Posted by: Hayley Briand (Family) on: Oct 22, 2005

Joan, we will always fondly remember how you made us take life easier by setting the example and showing us how not to rush through this world. Joan, you taught me the value of wise shopping (and plenty of it) and you made me laugh so much, my face hurt. Joan, every time I laugh, I will think of you. I wish you were here to explain to me why writing this tribute to you is making me cry instead. We love you, Jim and Susan - Posted by: Jim & Susan (Hillabold-Zaleschuk) (Friend) on: Oct 21, 2005

Condolences to the family. Cindy, a heartfelt hug. When I think of Joan, I remember her laughter. I also remember Joan as a great cook, fun hostess and, along with Richard, a warm and friendly adult presence for my daughter when Cindy and Erica were joined at the hip in their teenage years. Joan was a woman with true internal fortitude and if determination had been the cure for her illness, I know that she would be with her family still. I'm grateful to have known her and to have spent happy times with her back in Saskatoon. - Posted by: Lisa Henderson (Friend) on: Oct 20, 2005
