Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryMABEL ELIZABETH MERCY CHAPMAN (nee SHEWFELT) Peacefully on October 30, 2005, Mabel Elizabeth Mercy Chapman, passed away at the Pembina Manitou Health Center at the age of 82 years. Mabel was predeceased by her husband William (Bill) in 1972, daughter-in-law Cheryl in 2001 and by her 6 brothers and 4 sisters. She is survived by daughter Muriel (Fraser) McIntosh of Manitou, MB, sons Donald (Rose) of St.Claude, MB and Robert (Jill) of Winnipeg, MB. She is also lovingly remembered by granddaughters Carrie (Dave), Lisa, and Aimee and grandsons Blaine (Leah), Colin (Nancie) and James; sister Doris (Mike) Kowalchuk of Calgary, AB, sisters-in-law Betty Charette and Violet Chapman and many nieces and nephews. Mabel was born at home, January 30, 1923 the 5th daughter of 6 daughters and 6 sons born to Joseph P. and Marion Shewfelt of the Kingsley District. She married William Chapman on September 9, 1943 and after he returned home from Overseas in 1946, they farmed in the LaRiviere District and later north of Manitou until 1972. After Bill's sudden passing, Mabel moved into town. Music was especially enjoyable to Mabel and even in her last days, she entertained the residents and staff of the PMHC with her piano playing. She was a faithful organist at St. Andrew's United Church for 9 years and even as a child of 12, played the organ at Kingsley United Church. Over the years, Mabel liked to go to dances with Bill, hook rugs, curl, play bingo, play cards and tend to her yard. She also enjoyed hearing about all of the activities of her grandchildren. She will be especially remembered by her family for her quiet humour and acceptance of life with its hardships as well as joys. Mabel was a member of the Ladies Legion Auxiliary. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will take place on Thursday, November 3 at 2 p.m. at St. Andrew's United Church, Manitou, with Rev. Laurie Simpson officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Pembina Manitou Health Center Foundation, Box 129, Manitou, MB R0G 1G0 or St. Andrew's United Church Memorial Fund, Box 111, Manitou, MB R0G 1G0. The family would like to thank Dr. Voros and all the staff at the PMHC for the excellent care and kindness shown towards Mabel during her short stay there.
