KAREN PATRICIA KOWBEL (nee HUDSON) Peacefully with family at her side, Karen passed away on Saturday, October 29, 2005. Karen will be forever cherished and remembered by her beloved husband Brian, children Vanessa, Daniel and Ellen, mother Margaret Hudson, father Kenneth Hudson, sisters Lesley (Geoff) Newsham, Sue (Bruno) Peters, Sandy (Michael) Knudson, extended family Stephanie Baran, Henry and Nettie Kowbel, Louise (Ken) Sawchuck, Kathy Kowbel, Bruce Kowbel, Scott MacGregor, Donna (Marc) Wankling, nieces, nephews and many dear friends. Karen was born in Andover, Hampshire England on February 17, 1958. The family moved to Canada in 1959 and Karen's early years were spent in Winnipeg, St. Catharines and St. John, returning to Winnipeg in 1970. She graduated from Sturgeon Creek Regional Secondary School in 1976 and entered the University of Manitoba for post secondary studies, graduating with her Bachelor of Medical Rehabilitation (Physical Therapy) in 1981. Karen began her career at Grace Hospital, worked in private practice and returned to Grace Hospital until the fall of 2004. She loved all facets of Physiotherapy, but her favourite was working in Outpatient care. Karen was so proud of her patients who left her care being able to continue their active lives. She was a Physio to us all stressing the balance of healthy lifestyle, proper exercise and safety in all activities. Karen's family always came first. She was a devoted wife and mother. She instilled her love of music to her children. The piano is a focal point in the home with all excelling and continuing their musical studies. School band has also become part of their lives. Many weekends of family fun were spent at Minaki and Bird Lake, enjoying the lake life. She loved all aspects of family life - making special treats and dishes for her family and sharing with others. Her generosity and spirit touched many. She lived her life selflessly and quietly, always thinking of other's needs. Karen's final year was spent living with cancer. She taught us what cancer cannot do. Karen's greatest gifts this year was to teach us dignity in the face of adversity. Prayers will be said today, Wednesday, November 2 at 7:30 p.m. in Thomson In the Park Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray Blvd. Funeral Mass will take place on Thursday, November 3 at 2:30 p.m. in St. John Brebeuf Roman Catholic Church, 1707 John Brebeuf Place at Lanark with Fr. Darin Gurr the Celebrant. Brian and the family wish to extend sincere thanks to the staff at St. Boniface Hospital who helped her during her many visits, especially Dr. Paul Daeninck and Dr. Barry Rusnak and their teams for their compassionate care. In lieu of flowers the family asks for donations to be made in Karen's name to CancerCare Manitoba, 675 McDermot Ave, Winnipeg, MB, R3E 0V9. Condolences & Memories (4 entries)

  • I will sincerely miss Karen! She always had a smile for anyone even when they didn't have one for her. We shared many stories of the music programs our children were involved with and patroned the many fund-raisers. It was a given that she truly had a passion for music! Karen's friendship was a treasure to anyone who knew her. - Posted by: Joy Kulik (Co-Worker) on: Nov 07, 2005
