LESIA JACOBSON With terrible sadness the family of Lesia Jacobson (nee Hrydowy) mourns her passing after a protracted and complicated illness. Husband Ken attended her always, day and night, until her merciful release early Sunday, October 30, 2005, in the east wing of Riverview Health Centre. Our family is grateful for the help and compassion of everyone in Lesia's last days. The homecare people must also not be forgotten for their attendance and respite during the preceding weeks and months - thank you. Many thanks to Drs. C. Olweny, W. Dabrowska and Dr. Daeninck and all the caring nurses at St. Boniface Cancer Care as well as the ones at Riverview Health Centre. Lesia Hrydowy was born in Winnipeg, January 19, 1936, to Andrew and Mary Hrydowy. She grew up and went to school in the north end of Winnipeg, attending Faraday Elementary School, Ralph Brown and Issac Newton Schools. Extracurricular activities included basketball and attending classes in Ukrainian dance and language which she spoke fluently. She attended business college and worked as a stenographer with Mercury Publications and then with the Manitoba Government, at first making educational materials for schools, then with Community Development in the Norquay Building. Marrying Kenneth Jacobson of Elk Point, AB, in 1957, they began their life also in the north end of Winnipeg, carrying on in youthful high spirited bouts of athleticism and picnicing. Kenneth was transferred to Dryden, ON, and Lesia left the work force to start a career as wife and mother and their first son, Michael, appeared mid 1964, but landing back in Winnipeg shortly thereafter. Making a home in St. Vital, the family grew happily, with another son Kevin, in 1965, then a daughter Andrea in 1968. Lesia possessed a strong character - one in literacy, thoughtfulness and independence. Yet the single most important lesson came in the form of the simplest of statements - think for yourself. She instilled in her children integrity in thought, action and behaviour, to believe in your own intelligence. An avid reader of mystery novels, she loved to browse the used bookstores everywhere she went. Lesia is survived by husband Kenneth; sons, Michael and Kevin (Claudia); and daughter Andrea; granddaughter Katherine; as well as many beloved extended family members in Albert and Ontario, too numerous to mention. She was predeceased by her father Andrew in 1994; and mother Mary in 1996. Funeral service will be held 10:00 a.m., Saturday, November 5 at Korban Funeral Chapel, 907 Main St. Interment will follow in Holy Family Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in Lesia's memory may be made to CancerCare Manitoba, 675 McDermot Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3E 0V9, or Riverview Health Centre, One Morley Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3L 2P4.
