EMILY ANNE FITZPATRICK With grace and great dignity, at Grace Hospital just before 1:00 a.m. on Wednesday, October 26, 2005, Emily began her greatest journey. Emily was predeceased by her husband Alex, parents, Henry and Gladys Mansell, brother Alfred and sister-in-law Dorothy. She leaves to cherish her memory brother Arnold Mansell (Margaret), longtime confidant and devoted cousin Kathleen Poole and nephews, nieces and cousins from Canada, England, Ireland and the United States. Many good friends, including special friend Joe Hetzel, will also mourn her passing. Born in Winnipeg on June 4, 1923, Emily graduated from Normal School in 1941, obtaining her first job in Kelwood, MB. After moving to and teaching in Dauphin, she returned to Winnipeg, teaching at both General Byng and Oakenwald schools. Believing strongly in the power of an education, Emily returned to the classroom for awhile as a student at the University of Winnipeg, graduating in 1973 with a Bachelor of Arts. She retired in 1986. An active and lifelong member of Fort Garry United Church, Emily took her seat proudly in their choir loft. Her love of music drew her to sing with the Senior Citizens' Choir of Winnipeg. This year she was looking forward to singing with the choir at her new home, The Westhaven. Emily's spirit of volunteerism and respect for Canadian Veterans led her to an involvement with the Deer Lodge Hospital Ladies' Auxiliary. She was a proud member of The Imperial Veterans Legion No. 84, serving as their President until 1985 when they amalgamated with Fort Rouge Legion. Emily had currently been a member of the Fort Rouge Legion, a longtime member of The University Women's Club of Winnipeg, the Retired Teachers of Manitoba and a strong supporter of the Winnipeg School Patrol Program. An ardent baker (well known for her Monday morning freshly baked biscuits in the Teachers' Staff Room), Emily enjoyed knitting, crocheting, quilting, camping, cruising, watching the birds from her window and just spending quiet moments with her beloved dogs. She began our annual family tradition of enjoying the Santa Claus Parade and took delight in teaching us the Etiquette of Parade Watching . Emily, however, was best known in her neighbourhood of Wolseley, for her 50 years of Halloween Treat Bags containing homemade fudge, hand-pulled toffee and mouth-watering peanut brittle. The life of Emily Fitzpatrick will be honoured with a funeral service on Saturday, November 12 at 1:30 p.m. at Fort Garry United Church (800 Point Rd.). Reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Winnipeg Humane Society.
