LUCIEN EDWARD SMITH (SMITTY) August 20, 1931 - November 2, 2005 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of husband, father and grandfather, Lucien Edward Smith, at the age of 74 years, on Wednesday, November 2, 2005 at Arborg District Health Centre. Lucien was predeceased by his parents, Helene and Albert and a sister Margaret. Dad will be missed dearly by his wife of 48 years, Clara (Caners); children, Donald (Susan), David, Norman (Monique) and Eileen Hancharek (Mark). Grandchildren, Scott, Rodney, Brent, Tyler, Kayla, Christopher, Sheldon, Brittney, Amber and Mitchell. He is also survived by brothers, Emile (Giselle), Gerald (Gloria) and sisters, Bertha Giasson (Rev. Robert), Germaine Giasson, Denise Remillard, Yvonne Brunette, Agnes Oman (Gordie), Cecile Hall (Grant) and Annette, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Lucien was born in St. Boniface and raised in Fisher Branch, leaving home at 19 to work various jobs, including Drabiks Feed Mill, Arborg Transfer, Deren's Hardware, Kleysons Cartage, Arborg Co-op and Evergreen School Division. In 1976 he ventured out on his own, starting Smitty's Appliances, until sickness sadly forced him to retire in 1990. Retirement kept him busy through helping out at Smitty's Furniture, camping, travelling, woodworking and many auction sales. He will always be remembered as an honest hardworking family man. The family would like to express their deepest appreciation to the excellent staff at the Arborg and District Health Centre, giving special thanks to Dr. Beukes and Dr. Rabson. As well, a heartfelt thank you to Father Michael. Prayers will be held on Sunday, November 6, 7:00 p.m. at MacKenzie Funeral Home, Arborg. Funeral mass will be held at St. Philips Roman Catholic Church in Arborg, Monday, November 7 at 11:00 a.m. with viewing at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in memory of Lucien to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Canadian Blood Services. Arborg (MacKenzie) Funeral Home in care of arrangements. Father Who worked so hard and saved so long, For what we have today, And any time would sacrifice, His chance to rest or play. Who always saw his children have, The things he did without, And gave so much unselfishly. For that's what love's about. Who sought no honours and rewards, For all that he had done, Except to raise a family, To him the very finest one. Though we cannot evaluate Our Dad , his love, his worth, To us he'll always be Just Dad The greatest Dad on earth.
