Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryDON DOUGLAS March 13, 1912 - November 1, 2005 Dr. Donald George Douglas, aged 93, peacefully passed away on November 1, 2005, at Charleswood Care Centre. He was born on his family's farm seven miles north of Melfort, SK, on March 13, 1912, son of Donald Douglas and Jessie Douglas. In his youth he shared farm chores with his two brothers, and piano with his sister. He attended the one-room school in nearby Thaxted, then high school in Melfort. He went to Normal School and became a teacher, but saved his money, and soon went to the University of Saskatchewan with his younger brother Alex. The two Douglas boys both graduated with Honours degrees in physics. Don obtained his Masters in physics from Indiana University. During the war, he did research with Rogers Radio. Afterwards, he went to McGill University for his Ph.D and some post-doctoral research. In 1951, he accepted a position with the University of Manitoba Physics Department, where he remained until his retirement, pursuing research in gamma-ray spectroscopy. He was a skillful gardener, a do-it-yourself handyman, and he gained great pleasure from reading and playing the piano. Don was predeceased by his parents, his beloved wife Kay, his brothers, Kenneth and Alex and his sister Peggy, and by his youngest son Donnie. He is survived by his loving family: daughter Sylvia Li and her husband Robert Li, son Robert Douglas and his wife Marie D'Iorio, grandsons, Christopher Li and Max Douglas, granddaughters Sonia Douglas and Rosemary Li-Houpt and her husband Simon Houpt, and his great-grandchildren, Sascha Houpt and Michal Houpt. We love you, our Dad and Geedad. The memorial service will be held on Sunday, November 6 at 1:00 p.m., in Thomson In the Park Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray Blvd. Interment will take place at St. James Cemetery at a later date. Donations in lieu of flowers can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, Man. Division, 193 Sherbrook, Winnipeg, MB R3C 9Z9.
