PAULA LOWENSTEIN It is with deep sadness, that we announce the passing of Paula Lowenstein (nee Kanovsky), at the St. Boniface Hospital on November 11, 2005 at the age of 80 years. She was predeceased by her husband of 56 years, Rudy. Paula is survived by her three sons, Howard (Francie) of Calgary, Arnie (Valerie) of Boston, and Jeff (Cathy) of Vancouver as well as seven grandchildren, Jeremy, Daniel, Marc, Whitney, Michael, Rachel and Alana. Paula was born in Winnipeg on July 17, 1925 daughter of Mendel and Chantze Kanovsky both of whom immigrated to Canada from the Ukraine. She was the eldest daughter among four siblings - Eliyahu (of Jerusalem), Rose Pritzker (of Toronto), and Gerald (better known as Yossel of Del Ray Beach, Florida). She grew up in very modest circumstances in the north end of Winnipeg and graduated from St. John's High. She met her husband Rudy in 1948 and they were married in September of that year. They were inseparable and their bond grew with the years, even to the end. She was a devoted mother who wanted the best for each of her sons. Paula was a selfless person - she did for others before herself. She was active in a variety of organizations including Hadassah, ORT, Pioneer Women, and the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation. She will be remembered for her kindness, unassuming ways and love for her family and people. She will be profoundly missed by her children, grandchildren, relatives and friends. The family would like to thank Dr. Martha Shepertycky and the staff of the St. Boniface Hospital Unit 5B for their support and kindness. The funeral was held on November 13 at the Etz Chaim Synagogue. Pallbearers were her grandsons, Jeremy, Marc, Daniel and Michael, and cousins, Jeff and Sandy Bemel. Honorary pallbearers were her brother Gerald Kanovsky, grandson Whitney, cousin Sheldon Lifshin, and close friends, Lanny Jacob, Jack Nepon, and Jeff Thompson. Shiva is being observed at the Etz Chaim Synagogue. Donations can be made in her memory to the Rudy and Paula Lowenstein Endowment Fund c/o the Jewish Foundation of Manitoba, Holocaust Education Centre, 123 Doncaster St., Winnipeg, R3N 2B3 or to Hadassah Youth Aliyah Village, 2001 Beacon St., Suite 101, Brighton, MA, 02135.
