Baldur is survived by his wife of 52 years, Blanche Schaldemose (Berg); son Alan (Leanne); daughters, Susan (Larry), Sandra (Tony), and Dana (Dave); grandchildren, Jeff, Lisa, Kristin, Brent, Dallas, Alyx, and Tyra; brother Woody (Bea); sister June; and numerous nieces and nephews. Baldur was predeceased by his father and mother, Gunnlaugur and Kristin Schaldemose; his brothers and sisters, Adolberg, Stanley, Agust, Bev, Lenore, Joe, Kristin (Toots), Clifford, Bernice, and Jonas; and his grandson Robert Schaldemose. Baldur was born on January 12, 1925 at Winnipegosis, MB and lived there with his family until the age of 18. He was very proud of his family and spoke often of his parents and times at home in Winnipegosis. He enlisted with the Canadian Army in 1943 and served with B Squadron of the 10th Armoured Regiment The Fort Garry Horse . After being deployed in Europe, he served with the 22nd Armoured Regiment The Canadian Grenadier Guard in Belgium, Holland, and Germany. At war's end, Baldur returned to Manitoba. He never forgot those left behind and regularly participated in school awareness programs for students and remembrance activities. He was happy to be able to place the wreath as the representative for the Army at Remembrance ceremonies earlier this month. After returning to Manitoba, Baldur tried out a variety of occupations, and eventually began working with the Manitoba Government's Department of Fisheries in various locations throughout the province. Baldur continued to work with Manitoba Fisheries for the next forty years eventually becoming the Head of Fish Culture for the Province. He retired in 1989 and became quite active in community organizations in the Falcon and West Hawk Lake areas. Throughout his life, Baldur was very committed to the United Church and he fulfilled a number of functions with both the West Hawk Lake Congregation and the Selkirk Presbytery. His retirement allowed him to focus on this role. Baldur was very proud of his Icelandic heritage and was, at different points in his life, involved with a number of cultural organizations such as the Icelandic Canadian Fron of the Icelandic National League, The Logsberg Heimskringla Icelandic Newspaper, and the Canada Iceland Foundation. He travelled to Iceland in 1998. Baldur loved living in the Whiteshell Park where he had met his wife, Blanche, and he often said he considered it a privilege to be able to raise his family in such as beautiful setting as that of the West Hawk Lake Fish Hatchery. During his retirement, he thoroughly enjoyed his breaks with his coffee crew . He was an active participant at the community club and an avid curler in both Falcon Lake and Keewatin until his health prevented him from starting this season. Baldur was a role model in the community, serving over the years on the executive of the community club, the school board, the church executive, the local justice committee, and engaging in fund raising efforts on behalf of the local ambulance service. He was recently honoured by the community for all of his efforts. Baldur was an excellent father and a committed family man. His family was always reassured and comforted when he was present. He was a pillar of strength, an instiller of confidence, and a guaranteed place of safety when in need. His smile lit up the room and everyone in it. A special thanks is extended to all who participated in the recent healthcare efforts. A memorial service will be held on November 28, 2005 at 1:30 p.m. at the West Hawk Lake United Church, at West Hawk Lake, MB. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the West Hawk Lake United Church, or the Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Manitoba Chapter at Box 21008, 33 - 3900 Grant Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R3R 3K2. I met Baldur in 1961 as a teenager working for the Fisheries. I will always remember his smile and the wisdom he shared in many heart to heart talks. He was a big brother to many of the younger staff. Many years later, I was happy to be able to renew our acquaintance at Keewatin Curling Club. His obituary brings home the meaning of "celebration of life" He will be sadly missed. Sincerely, Doug Kilpatrick - Posted by: Doug Kilpatrick (Co-Worker) on: Nov 27, 2005

My sincere condolences to all who knew and loved Baldur. My opportunity in ministry I believe I owe to Baldur with his help and support. When I stumbled he was there with our God to help me understand it was not the mistakes that we make but what we can learn from them. I will continue to think of Baldur as one of the shining lights in my life. May God be with you in this time of sorrow. - Posted by: Vern Henry (Friend) on: Nov 27, 2005
