JOHN S.R. BAINS It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Jack, on Wednesday, November 23, 2005 at Deer Lodge Centre. Forever remaining to cherish in his memory are his son Gary (Rachelle); daughter Margaret; grandsons, Caleb and Spencer; sisters, Elsie Low (Roy deceased); Frances Wilson (Ralph deceased); and Janet Stimpson (Al); as well as numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his loving wife Evelyn, grandson Matthew and his youngest sister Louie McCombe. He was born November 6, 1918 on a farm near Cromer, MB, the only son of John and Florence Bains. Following the untimely death of their father, the family moved to Virden where Jack attended the Virden Collegiate. On graduating from grade XII, he received the Governor General's Medal. For further education, it was necessary for the family to move to Winnipeg in 1936, where Jack received his BA at the University of Winnipeg, a BA in Social Work at the University of Manitoba, and after the war, his Masters Degree at McGill, Montreal. Jack then entered the Provincial Social Services from 1953 - 1983. On his retirement, he received a special medal from the government for his contribution to social work. During the war, Jack gave five years of service overseas in the RCAF as a navigator/flying control officer, finishing as a Flight Lieutenant. Jack had a great love of gardening, and especially trees. This was very evident in his work at Kola Church and cemetery near Virden, where he and wife Evelyn laboured for a number of years, planting many, many trees and shrubs to give it a park-like appearance; and for this was awarded a Queen's Medal. Very appropriately, his ashes will be interred there in the spring beside those of his parents and wife. Through his lifetime, Jack was an avid reader and he had collected a vast library at home. He was kind, considerate, loving dad, grandpa, brother, uncle and friend, and we shall miss him. Jack's funeral service will be held on Monday, November 28 at 2:00 p.m. in the church of St. Stephen St. Bede's Church, 99 Turner Avenue, St. James. Our sincere thanks go out to the exceptional nurses for their tender loving care of Jack on 4E and T7, and the special volunteers and pastoral care at Deer Lodge Centre. In lieu of flowers as an expression of sympathy, donations may be made in Jack's memory to the St. Bede Memorial Fund or to the charity of one's choice. Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • My father served with Jack in the RCAF. I have a photo of him with a group of other servicemen, in Croft, according to the photo note. I would love to share it with the family for their personal history. My father chose his friends carefully, so I know that Jack must have been a special person. My father was also a flying control officer. My father passed away in 2008 in Cardston, Alberta - Posted by: Daphne Spackman Hayes (Daughter of one of his WW2 buddies) on: Apr 25, 2013

  • As a volunteer on 4 east I came to know John as someone who spoke volumes with his eyes. The love his kids showed him touched my heart. When I talked with John about that, he smiled. I know you'll miss him terribly, but you are so lucky to have had him as a dad. - Posted by: Bill Keith (Acquaintance) on: Dec 09, 2005
