LAURA MOWAT (nee MONKMAN) Our mom, Laura Mowat, passed away at the Grace Hospital on Saturday, November 26, 2005 at the age of 88 years. She will forever remain in the memory of her children, Marie (Neil), Bernice (Martin), Edgar (Terry), Dennis (Ursula), Ron (Judy), Cliff (Maureen), Randy (Grace) and Danny (Karen); 17 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband Peter, son Garry, granddaughter Nicole, six brothers and five sisters. Also left surviving is her brother Bert, her in-laws, Elsie, Gladys, Dorothy, Allie, Tom, Roland and many nieces and nephews. Laura was born at Loon Straights on Lake Winnipeg to William and Roseanne Monkman. She along with Peter and their family lived here and at Matheson Island until moving to Winnipeg in 1965. We will remember her as a caring mother who went far beyond the call of duty in caring for us. Mom's greatest joy was spending time out at the lake. Sincere thanks to all her family and friends who made this possible. Special thanks to all her angels of mercy , her health care providers. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, December 1 at 1:00 p.m. in the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Selkirk, 6088 Hwy. No. 9A (just south of Rolling Mills) with Intern Kirk Testad officiating. Honorary pallbearers will be her grandsons. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or a charity of choice. Gilbart Funeral Home, Selkirk in care of arrangements.

Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • Mother and I are sorry to hear of this loss. "Auntie Laura" as we called her was always such fun, and Auntie Mary Monkman. Mother and Laura used to have such fun at Matheson Island in the recent years. May she rest in peace. - Posted by: Wayne and Florence Wortman (Family) on: Dec 14, 2005

  • AUNT LAURA WAS BEAUTIFUL, SMART, WITTY AND FULL OF FUN. IN OUR FAMILY SHE WAS EVERYONE'S FAVOURITE -- A FAVOURITE SISTER, SISTER-IN-LAW, AND AUNT. AS A KID AT "THE STRAITS" I REMEMBER RUSHING UP TO VISIT HER AND AS SOON AS WE WOULD GET IN THE DOOR, SHE WOULD START ORDERING US AROUND. WHICH PROMPTED ME TO SAY TO MOM ONE DAY "HOW COME AUNTIE LAURA THINKS ALL THE KIDS ARE HER KIDS." LITTLE DID I KNOW IT WAS BECAUSE WE WERE LUCKY ENOUGH TO HAVE AN AUNT WHO LOVED US ALL VERY MUCH.. SHE WAS A VERY SPECIAL AUNT. - Posted by: Marie Monkman Coe (Family) on: Dec 01, 2005
