Date of Passing: Nov 26, 2005
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryANDREW DOWNIE 1925 - 2005 It is with great sadness the family announces the passing of Andrew, on Saturday, November 26, 2005, at the St. Boniface General Hospital at the age of 80 years. He is survived by his wife Shirley, of 57 years of marriage; children, Lorne (Maureen), Karen (Brian), Scott (Helen); and grandchildren, Steven, Bryce, Nicole, Jennifer and Cameron. Andrew was born in Burntisland, Scotland, and came to Canada at an early age. He lived in the Brooklands area where he went to school. In 1943 he joined the Canadian Navy and served on the Corvette The Calgary on the North Atlantic and The English Channel. After the war he worked at Motor Coach Industries, Pritchard Engineering and IEC Holden Company. Andrew retired in 1988 and he and Shirley spent their summers at West Hawk Lake and winter holidays in the southern United States until ill health made it impossible. In compliance with Andrew's wishes, there will be no formal funeral service. Andrew would like his friends to remember all the laughter and good times they had together. A special thanks to the staff at St. Boniface Palliative Care. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Andrew's memory to his favourite charity, The Salvation Army Divisional Headquarters, 500-55 Donald St., Winnipeg, MB R3C 1L8. What is a Father? A father is a thing that is forced to endure childbirth without an anaesthetic. A father is a thing that growls when it feels good, and laughs very loud when scared half to death. A father never thinks he is quite the hero his daughter thinks, never quite the man his son believes him to be - and it worries him sometimes, so he works too hard to try and smooth the rough places in the road for those who will follow him. I don't know where fathers go when they die. But I have an idea that after a good rest, wherever it is, he won't be happy unless there is work to do. He won't just sit on a cloud, and wait for the girl that he has loved and the children she bore. He will be busy there too, repairing the stairs, oiling the gates, improving the street, smoothing the way.
