DR. SAM KATZ December 16, 1918 - November 26, 2005 Dr. Sam Katz passed away on November 26, 2005. He was predeceased by his parents Rose and Joe Katz and his brother Dr. Sydney R. Katz. He is survived by his wife Carol of almost 62 years and also by his children, Fern L. Hershfield (Justice Joe E. Hershfield) and Jack Z. Katz (Lesly) and by his grandchildren, Jay H. Hershfield (Leslie), Lauren Hershfield, Shaun Katz and Jenna Katz and great-grandson Nathan Hershfield. He will be greatly missed by his family, many friends and associates. Dr. Sam Katz was born and raised in Winnipeg. He attended St. John's High School and the University of Manitoba. After graduating from dentistry at the University of Toronto, he practiced dentistry for over 50 years in Winnipeg and retired at the age of 80. He was very progressive in his work and continued throughout his career to take courses to update his knowledge. He was a past president of the Alpha Omega Dental Fraternity; a captain in the Canadian Dental Corps during the Second World War; a charter member of the Crown and Bridge Group; and a charter member of the Glendale Golf and Country Club. He had a self-taught talent for interior design and being very artistic and creative he painted, sculpted and invented many things. At the age of 65 he began to take music lessons and learned to play the organ. He also took computer lessons and was often on the Internet. He enjoyed attending the Retired Senior Professional and Business Men's Club weekly. He contributed generously to many charities. Funeral services were held on Monday, November 28, 2005 at the Shaarey Zedek Synagogue, conducted by Rabbi Alan Green with interment at the Shaarey Zedek Cemetery. Pallbearers were Joe E. Hershfield, Jay Hershfield, Lesly Katz, Shaun Katz, Ken Jacob and David Lewis. Honorary pallbearers were Dr. Morris Broder, Dr. Perry Kimmelman, Dr. Harold Fleishman, Dr. Art Frankel, Jack Levit and Ike Permut. Donations in Sam's memory may be made to a charity of your choice. The family wishes to thank the Grace Hospital staff for their compassionate care. The world was a better place while Sam was in it. He was a man of exemplary character and had a charming personality. He was greatly loved and will be greatly missed. To live in hearts left behind is not to die.

  • My uncle, Orville Laird, deceased in 1974 was in the Dental Corps in WW2. This was not a large unit and they would have known one another. Wonderful to see such a fine life which also contributed to what we enjoy. - Posted by: Vic Laird (Acquaintance) on: Dec 06, 2005
