MRS. ELIZABETH MARGARET (BETTIE) RIDGEWAY (nee MACKENZIE) On December 2 at her residence in Stonewall, Bettie passed away at the age of 87. Bettie was born September 21, 1918 in Winnipeg, one of eight children of John and Mary MacKenzie. Her growing up years were spent in the Interlake community of Eckhart. She attended school at Grassmere and Warren. She married William Weston Ridgeway of Grosse Isle in 1947. In the fall of 1959, Weston passed away, and Bettie was left to prepare for the arrival of their only child. Their son Weston was born in February 1960. She remained on the farm home until 1996 when she moved to her retirement suite in Stonewood Place in Stonewall. Some of her happiest moments were the wedding of her son Weston to Donna Simonson in 1983, and the arrival of two grandsons, Nelson in 1987 and Joel in 1990. She was a proud mother and grandmother, she got great pleasure in watching her two grandsons grow up, always curious as to where their sports activities would take them next. She was excited about the plans for the original family home to be moved from the farm and restored into a Heritage Home for the Grosse Isle community. Bettie was an active member in the Grosse Isle Recreation Club, Womens Institute and the United Church. She was always happy and energetic, loved to visit and joke with her many dear friends and family. Besides her husband, she was also predeceased by her parents John and Mary MacKenzie; five brothers, Evan, Bill, John, Alex, Bert; sister Beth; and most recently by her closest sister Christine. Surviving her loss but cherishing her memory are her son Weston (Donna) and grandsons Nelson and Joel of Grosse Isle; sisters-in-law Florence MacKenzie and Alice May Ridgeway. Also close to her always were her two nephews Herb (Katheryne) and Randy (Bev) Tyler. Donations in her memory may be made to the Grosse Isle Recreation Club (Heritage House Fund), South Interlake Arena Building Fund, or the Prime Meridian Trail Association. A memorial service will be held at MacKenzie Funeral Chapel, Stonewall on Thursday, December 8 at 10:30 a.m. followed by a celebration of her life at the Grosse Isle Community Hall. MacKenzie Funeral Home, Stonewall in care of arrangements.
