LYDIA SIGURDSON 1915 - 2005 On Saturday, December 3, 2005 our beloved Mother, cherished Grandmother and Great-Grandmother passed away at The Middlechurch Home of Winnipeg after suffering the debilitating effects of Alzheimer Disease for a number of years. Mother was born to George and Katherine York on November 7, 1915 in Hilda, AB. After several moves the family came to settle in Winnipeg where Mother resided for the rest of her life. Late in 1936 Mother was swept of her feet by a very handsome Icelander from the Interlake, namely, Baldur Helgi Sigurdson. After a whirlwind courtship they married on June 19, 1937. Their loving union was blessed with two daughters, Carol Sigrid and Sandra Elizabeth. Mother managed to work part-time throughout their marriage, as well as sew beautiful clothing for her daughters and granddaughter, but always have fresh cinnamon buns and other goodies bringing delectable scents to our home on a Saturday morning. Mother retired from Eatons at the age of 70 with 18 years of service. After her retirement she continued to enjoy the friendship of her fellow Eatonians from the Candy/Fancy Food Departments at their monthly luncheons. In 1968 Mom and Dad welcomed their first grandchild, Kristen Elizabeth followed by Kirk Terrance in 1971. They were truly the joy of their lives. No two grandparents could have given more unconditional love, guidance and support. In October, 1985 Mother lost the love of her life when Father passed away suddenly from a heart attack. In addition to her parents, she was also predeceased by all of her siblings, Mary Schwartz, Katie Starger of Rhein, SK and Jack York of Winnipeg. She was also predeceased by two brothers in infancy. Mom's retirement and widowhood all in the same month, left her with many empty hours to fill. Within the year she joined the volunteer force in the Gift Shop at Misericordia Hospital were she contributed over 1,000 hours of her time, talent and energy. Left to mourn her passing are daughters, Carol Clifford and husband James of Coquitlam, BC; Sandra Fleming and husband Terry of Winnipeg; granddaughter Kristen Bahr and husband Stephen, great-grandchildren, Zachary and Jessica; grandson Kirk Fleming and wife Kimberley (nee Gross) and great-grandchild Elisia of Whitemouth, MB. In addition, Mother is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews in Winnipeg and Western Canada. A memorial service will be held Thursday, December 8 at 1:45 p.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main St. Organist, Mrs. Sharon Gross. A private interment has taken place with the immediate family at Glen Eden Memorial Gardens, West St. Paul, MB. The family wishes to extend their heartfelt thanks to the nurses, healthcare aides, activity workers and all staff who provided such quality and tender care to our beloved Mother, Grandmother and Great-Grandmother. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba, 120 Donald St., Winnipeg, MB, R3C 4G2 or The Middlechurch Home Foundation, Inc., 280 Balderstone Rd., West St. Paul, MB, R4A 4A6 would be greatly appreciated. Til we meet again at Heavens Gate, dearest Mom Cropo Funeral Chapel 586-8044

Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • Sandra and family. I am so deeply sorry to hear about your loss. I am so sorry I couldn't be there to care for your mom/grandma for the last several weeks. I looked after Lydia for many years so naturally she has a very special place in my heart. You Sandra were a fabulous daughter and it was very apparent how deeply you cared for your mom. It was a pleasure getting to know you and your family over the past few years. You are all in my thoughts and prayers. Maureen - Posted by: Maureen Grove (Friend) on: Dec 05, 2005
