Date of Passing: Dec 04, 2005
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryHAZEL DYKES (nee WEST) Hazel passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 4, 2005, with her family at her side, at Bethania Personal Care Home at the age of 93 years. Hazel was predeceased by her beloved husband of 60 years John and her sister Olive. She will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered by her children, Bryan (Trudy), James (Carmen), Lois Robinson (Bob) and Susan Zwingerman (Ed); grandchildren, Brett (Colleen), Lisa (James), Tracy (Alf), Jennifer (Kirk), Matthew, Emily, Jenna, Ryan, Katie and Jordan; brother Alden (Marg); sister Lois; brother-in-law James (Jeanne); as well as numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Hazel was born in Winnipeg on July 23, 1912 and attended school in Lockport. She met Johnnie while snowshoing and they were married in 1938. Over the years they raised their four children and enjoyed spending time with all of the grandchildren. They spent many happy times at their cottage at Brereton Lake and loved hiking, canoeing, camping, berry picking, snowshoing, cross country skiing and curling. Hazel and Johnnie travelled extensively and especially enjoyed exploring wilderness areas. They made a great team, Mom would dream up the adventure and Dad would make it happen. Mom's heart and home was always open to those in need, whether it was family, friends, a stranger or a stray animal, she tried to help them all. Music was always a big part of every gathering at the Dykes'. She lovingly tended to her garden and could make anything grow. Mom was an accomplished artist and also enjoyed knitting, sewing, cooking and baking. She was a really remarkable person (and sometimes a little mischievous), who was ahead of her times in many ways. She touched the hearts of all who knew her and will be sadly missed. A special thank you to all the staff at Bethania for their loving care to Mom over the past five years. Memorial service will be held on Thursday, December 8 at 1:00 p.m. at Bethania Personal Care Home, 1045 Concordia Ave. Officiated by Gerhard Friesen. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the pet program at Bethania, North Whiteshell Trail Association (Brereton Lake), in care of Box 138, Seven Sisters, MB R0E 1Y0 or to a charity of your choice. Arrangements entrusted to: CHAPEL LAWN FUNERAL HOME CREMATION AND RECEPTION CENTRE 885-9715 Family and friends are invited to sign the Book of Condolence at www.chapellawn.mb.ca.
