He enlisted in the Canadian Army in November 1939 and served overseas with the Royal Canadian Ordnance Corp IST Field Park Division from January 1940 to December 1944. It was during this time that he met and married Gladys with whom he would share nearly 61 years of marriage until her death in August 2004. Mort and Gladys resided in Moose Jaw, SK where Mort worked as a Carman for the CPR until accepting a transfer and moving to Winnipeg in 1968. Upon his retirement from the CPR in 1978, Mort began his second career as the part time custodian at Sir John Franklin Community Centre where he worked for 14 years until his second retirement at the age of nearly 79 in 1992. During his retirement years he enjoyed growing roses, gladiolas, tomatoes, strawberries and giant sunflowers in his garden. He was an avid Blue Bomber and Blue Jays fan and curling season would find him cheering for our Manitoba and Canadian teams. Our family wishes to thank all the very special angels of Tower 3 at Deer Lodge Centre for their loving care and concern for our Dad over the past three and a half years. In accordance with Dad's wishes, cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, December 9 at the Worship Centre, Deer Lodge Centre, 2109 Portage Ave. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Alzheimer's Society, the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba or a charity of your choice would be an appreciated tribute to Dad's memory. Remembering Glad and Morts wedding day in England, (I was a bridesmaid), after the wedding a jeep full of Mort's army buddies followed the wedding car singing, 'You are my Sunshine' very loudly. Hearing this song always reminds me of Glad (my sister) and Mort - Posted by: Joyce Chapman (Family) on: Dec 16, 2005

Mort and Gladys lived next door to us in our little town in Sask. for only a few years, but during that time they gave me my first babysitting job. I came to know and respect them. I was fortunate to be able to reconnect with them in the 80's when I lived in Winnipeg. I will always remember Mort and Gladys with fondness. Mort was a gentleman of the first order and Gladys was such a lively ray of sunshine. I never thought of Mort without Gladys and I count myself fortunate to have known both of them. - Posted by: Shirley Van de Vliert (Davis) (Friend) on: Dec 12, 2005
