EDITH WAISMAN On Sunday, December 4, 2005, Edith Waisman passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family. Edith was predeceased by her father Zev Tuttman and her brother Leon, who perished in the Holocaust; her mother Esther, in 1971; and her beloved husband Michael, in 1990. She leaves to mourn her passing daughter and son-in-law, Hanna and Harry Heinrichs; son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Alice Weissmann; and her grandson Ben, the apple of her eye. Edith was born in Chernowitz, Bukovina, a region of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Her upbringing in Little Vienna , as Chernowitz was then known, instilled in her a lifelong love of opera and symphonic and Yiddish music. The war and the tragic loss of her father and brother left an indelible scar on Edith. After the war, she met and married Michael Waisman and they settled in Mediash, Romania. With great difficulty, they escaped communist-ruled Romania and immigrated to Winnipeg in 1962. Together they worked hard at many jobs and eventually, at the family corner grocery store on Burrows and Powers, in order to make a life for their children and themselves. In her later years, Edith loved to attend the Adult Leisure Program at Shaarey Zedek Synagogue, greatly enjoying her friends, the lunch and the entertainment. Despite Edith's worsening heart condition, her instructions to the family were clear, No hospitals, no institutions . In the end, she passed away peacefully with her family by her side. Words cannot express the gratitude of Edith's family for the gentle and compassionate comfort care given to her by Dr. Louis Chung and by all the staff in Emergency and 5U4 at Seven Oaks General Hospital. Their loving kindness will always be remembered. Donations in Edith's memory may be made to the Shaarey Zedek Synagogue Adult Leisure Fund (phone 452-3711) or the charity of one's choice.
