FLORENCE SPRATT It is with great sadness that we mark the passing of Florence Spratt, on December 8, 2005. Florence was born in Ireland, on November 14, 1905, and came to Canada with her mother and sister to join her father in 1911. Florence resided all her life in Winnipeg - first on Seven Oaks Avenue, then in the Riverview area, and finally on Wellington Crescent. Florence was always a strong and independent lady who taught Grade one classes at several schools, but most of her teaching career was at the King Edward School. She had many fond memories of the teachers and students and was well loved and remembered fondly by them. She was a lifelong Eatonian and spent many happy times there shopping with her mother and sister. Florence was an avid gardener and, with her sister Irene, was a member of the Winnipeg Horticultural Society for many years and competed and judged many of the competitions. Florence travelled extensively with her nephews and sister, and enjoyed Hawaii. Some of Florence's fondest memories were of touring the gardens and conservatories in Hawaii with her nephews. Florence was predeceased by her mother Catherine; her father Thomas; and her sister Irene. Florence was a great lady and had a zest and enjoyment of life. She was active and independent until shortly before her death, enjoying the recent celebrations which were held to mark her 100th birthday. Florence is survived by her two special nephews, Rob and Jim; and her longtime friend and fellow teacher, Jean Belyea. We would like to thank the staff of Victoria General Hospital, especially the staff in Emergency and on the third floor, and the chaplain Ron Long. They all made Florence's final journey one of peace and comfort. Special thanks also to the Thorvaldson Care Centre and especially to Irene, Betty and Frieda who helped Florence to remain independent during her stay. Rob and Jim would like to thank the many people who phoned and provided support during Flossie's short time in the hospital, especially Suzanne, Thomas, May and Elfie. A private memorial service will be held at a later date. When I am gone, release me, let me go I have so many things to see and do You must not tie yourself to me with tears Be happy that I have had so many years I gave you my love, you can only guess How much you gave me in happiness I thank you for the love each have shown But now it is time I travelled on alone So grieve a while for me, if grieve you must Then let your grief be comforted by trust It is only for a while that we must part So bless the memories in your heart I will not be far away, for life goes on So if you need me, call and I will come Though you cannot see or touch me, I will be near And if you listen with your heart, you will hear All of my love around you soft and clear Then, when you must come this way alone I will greet you with a smile and a Welcome Home Goodbye, Flossie. We will always remember you and you will always be in our hearts.
