Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryDOUGLAS HELGI DURRANT JOHNSON On the evening of December 14, 2005, our beloved husband, father, brother and friend Doug, passed away suddenly at his home at the age of 54. Doug was born on May 24, 1951 to Lloyd and Marjorie (Stanier), the middle of five sons. He grew up on Strathcona Street and attended Clifton School, Sargent Park School and D.M.C.I. He was very enthusiastic about sports and was an avid hockey and football player. In the early 70's while playing junior football for the Winnipeg Hawkeyes as an all-star centre his team won The Little Grey Cup' in Montreal for which he received The Order of the Buffalo Hunt. He also had a great interest in motorbikes and spent many happy times with his friend Gordie Park and their bikes. After high school Doug followed in his brother Jack's footsteps and joined The Winnipeg Police Department in 1971 as a Cadet. He began walking the Main Street beat' alone in a buffalo coat with his only communication being a call box'. In his years with the Police Department he worked in various districts and divisions as a uniformed officer, street supervisor, plain-clothes detective and undercover officer. Doug was a very proficient marksman and was a member of the Winnipeg Police Revolver Club serving as its President for over 20 years. He cherished the many friendships he made with people from all over the world. He was a keen and enthusiastic police officer and retired after 27 years of distinguished service with the rank of Detective Sgt. in 1998. Doug's skill and knowledge were put to great use during his years with Quest Investigations. He was very proud to have been a member of C.S.I.S. here in Winnipeg, and after five years retired in June of this year to be home to dedicate his time and life to his wife and two children. His greatest joy was being a full-time parent to his children Jeffrey and Dawn and full-time companion to his wife, Catherine. Doug had a creative streak and a tremendous interest in woodworking. He rarely turned anyone down who needed help with a project, whether it was a commercial display or a neighbourhood child's artwork. He had a lifelong interest in photography and video taped almost every one of his children's hockey games. Doug was looking forward to an active retirement, home improvements, travel with his family and fun with his kids. Doug is survived by his wife Catherine; son Jeffrey; daughter Dawn; brothers, Lloyd (Alene), Jack (Jan), Tim (Anna), and Don; sister-in-law Alixe Harbottle (John); and many nieces and nephews. His parents predeceased him. Should you desire donations may be made to The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba in Doug's memory. Funeral service of Doug will be held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, December 20 at Charleswood United Church, 4820 Roblin Blvd. Expressions of condolence can be sent to condolences@nbardal.mb.ca. To Doug's family, I just heard the sad news. I worked with Doug in District 2. He was the patrol sargeant on my shift, and later a partner in the back office. I remember his friendly guidance and support that he gave me. I was a new constable, and I can honestly say he was always encouraging and supportive of me. He always had this twinkle in his eye, especially when he talked about being able to spend more time with his kids after retirement. He is definitely one of the good guys. - Posted by: Tim Rhind (Family) on: Dec 17, 2005
