WILLIAM SHYMANSKI With great sorrow the family wishes to announce the peaceful passing of William Shymanski at the Health Sciences Centre on December 25, 2005. Bill was born at the General Hospital on December 2, 1928. His parents then moved to a farm on Saskatchewan Avenue which was expropriated by the Canadian government to expand the airport. He attended Bannatyne School where he won the Governor General's award in Grade 9. Bill left home at 16 and began work for the railroad in Golden, BC. He did accounting in Winnipeg, cut pulp in northern Manitoba and worked in various mines in Yukon, British Columbia and Manitoba. Returning to Winnipeg he worked for Supercrete until he started his own Redi-mix concrete company in 1974. He came out of retirement to work for a year at Border Steel as a welder, working on projects that still stand in the city today. Dad met the light of his life Elsie Obach in September 1957. They married in 1958 and raised five children, Bill (fiancee Lana Rosentreter), Kathy (David Borys), Mark (Jenn), Jill (Gus Aggelopoulos) and Candy (Doug Daher). Dad took great joy in his grandchildren, Matthew (fiancee Niki Kirzinger), Sam and Anna Borys, Jenna and Jacob Daher, Joseph and Peter Aggelopoulos and Lauren and Paul Shymanski. Dad is also survived by his sister Ann McMillan; brother Roy; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Dad was predeceased by his parents Michael (1964) and Mary (nee Bernat) (1985); brother-in-law Warren McMillan (1993); and sister-in-law Monica (1999). Dad had a lifelong interest in learning and was an avid reader. Dad was self taught on many subjects and particularly interested in the history of the Second World War. He taught himself to weld and later completed courses in welding. Dad loved metal work projects and produced both functional and artistic pieces, such as canopy beds and planters. He built a field stone entryway for his driveway and this year he built the wrought-iron gate that completed the project. Dad's other stonework projects included the Manitoba Stone Shrine cross, and cairns to mark the pioneer cemetery at St. Michael's Church in Cook's Creek, MB, and to commemorate a Ste. Rita pioneer family. Dad planted a garden that got bigger every year. He was particularly fond of fresh corn on the cob and would plant an extra row for each new grandchild. Dad was active in his community and served on the Planning commission in Springfield. While not a parishioner, Dad supported St. Michael's Parish with construction projects and corn on the cob at Heritage Day. Dad built up a good relationship with Fr. Krivanek at St. Michael's and was made a lifetime member of the Cook's Creek Heritage Museum. The family wishes to thank the nurses, aides, and all the staff in Emergency and on GH4 at the Health Sciences Centre for their attentive and sensitive care both of Bill and all of us during these weeks. Special thanks to Dr. Paunovic and Dr. Vanameyde. Memorial mass will be celebrated at St. Michael's Church, Cook's Creek, at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, December 29. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to CancerCare Manitoba. CROPO FUNERAL CHAPEL 586-8044
