JOHN MAXWELL (JACK) STEEL August 3, 1942 - December 23, 2005 It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of John Maxwell (Jack) Steel, aged 63, on December 23, 2005. Jack was predeceased by his father Gerald in 1997. He leaves behind to mourn his loss, mother Jean, his beloved wife Lindsay, son Bob Steel (Angie); daughters Debbie Chapman (Parry); and Tracey Steel; sister Marilyn Cosgrove (Gary); brother-in-law Brian Hull; stepchildren Kim Bouchard (Paul), Candace Nykiforuk (Richard) and Scott Hamblin (Karen). Jack is also survived by his grandchildren Cody and Bailey Steel; Danielle and Breeanna Chapman; Ricky and Katelynn; Alexandra and Madison Bouchard; Stephanie and Meagan Nykiforuk; Jaryd and Janessa Hamblin; niece Kelly Dalton (Doug); and nephew Sean Cosgrove (Karin) and their respective families. Jack grew up and attended school in Winnipeg. He entered the Fire Department on June 15, 1965 starting at the Fort Garry Fire Station. He worked at various stations in the city over his career. Jack retired as a Senior Fire Prevention Officer on March 3, 1996 as rank of Captain with over 30 years of service. In his earlier years, Jack enjoyed the annual firefighter fishing derbys, spending time at the cabin at Grand Beach, golfing and socializing with friends and family. Jack has had the good fortune to have been able to travel over the last several years with his wife Lindsay. Some vacations were taken with best friends Les and Carol Robinson to various locations and others by themselves to their favourite spot at Hawaii where they would spend a month relaxing and enjoying time with friends they had made there. Jack was a very warm and friendly person who made friends wherever he went. He was fondly remembered by the name Captain Jack from friends of his daughter. All who met Jack will remember his bright smile and engaging personality. Jack's family would like to extend their gratitude to the First Responder Fire Fighters and Ambulance attendants for their tremendous efforts. We would also like to thank the Hospital Chaplin Doug, Marlene who made all the phone calls for us and to Jackie, nurses and doctors in the emergency ward. Viewing for family and friends will be held on Friday December 30 from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Thomson In the Park Funeral Home, 1291 McGillvray Blvd. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 31 at Thomson In the Park Funeral Home at 1:00 p.m. with the Fire Department Chaplin Mark Young officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jack's memory to the Fire Fighters Burn Fund.
