Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryRUTH MYRTLE CAISTER Peacefully, surrounded by her loving family, on Monday, December 26, 2005 at the Douglas Campbell Lodge, Ruth Myrtle Caister of Portage la Prairie, widow of the late Cecil Caister passed away at the age of 81 years. Funeral service will be held in St Mary's la Prairie Anglican Church, Portage la Prairie, MB. on Saturday, December 31 at 1:30 p.m. Interment will follow in the family plot at Hillside Cemetery. Ruth was born on January 27, 1924, eldest of six children to Daphne and John Casselman of Morrisburg, ON. She then attended normal school in Ottawa where she received her teachers certificate. After teaching in Ontario for a year, she moved to Saskatchewan, then to Winnipeg, and eventually ending up in Portage where she taught at several country schools. While teaching at the West Curtis School, she met Cecil Caister. She returned to Ontario, soon followed by Cecil, and they were married in 1947. After a year in Cardinal, Ontario, they returned to the West Curtis District where they farmed and she continued to teach. In 1962 the family moved to Portage and she worked for Child and Family Services for a year before resuming her teaching career at Victoria School, and Prince Charles School where she retired in 1982. Her family and her church were the two most important parts of her life. She enjoyed attending her children's and grandchildren's activities, concerts and sports events. She was a member of the Ruth Rebecca Lodge, served on the board at St Mary's la Prairie Church, was a member of the retired teachers group, worked with the Women's Shelter, the Portage Arts Council, and sang in the church choir. She loved reading, music and travelling. Predeceased by her husband Cecil in 1988, sister Aileen McDonnell and brother-in-law Allan Caister. She leaves to mourn her passing her daughter Jane (Bill) Human of Portage and grandchildren Dana, Paul (Tammy), and great grandchildren Robbie, Chantal, Hope, her daughter Marilyn (Barry) Strilec of Winnipeg, grandchildren Kirk (Katrina), Shawn, her son Gerry (Yvonne) of Winnipeg, grandchildren David, Danielle, great grandchildren Ainsley, Evelyn, her daughter Linda (Leonard) Duchnycz of High Bluff, grandchildren Cynthia (Shaun), Alison, Erin, great grandchild Tanner, her son John (Janice) of Portage, grandchildren Chris, Melanie, her son Wes (Jackie) of Portage, her daughter Dana (Doug) McArthur of Brandon, grandchild Jill, her son Bruce (Moneca) of Portage, grandchildren Scott, Brad, Natalie, Adrien, and Matthew. She is also survived by brothers Neale Casselman of Arnprior, ON, Ralph Casselman of England, sisters Mary (Bob) Perry of Kingston, ON, Daphne (Bob) Burns of London, ON, brothers and sisters-in-law Leonard (Bea), Leslie (Donna), Edwin, Albert (Marian), Irene Caister, Audrey (Boris) Zurkan, Alex (Frieda) McDonnell and many nieces and nephews. Friends may call at the funeral home for visitation on Friday, December 30 from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. Should friends so desire, memorial donations may be made to the Central Plains Cancer Care Services, or a charity of your choice.
