JACK (JOHN JOSEPH) ANDRICH 1917 - 2005 After a short illness, Jack passed away at Victoria General Hospital on December 23, 2005. He leaves to cherish his loving memory and to mourn his passing, his daughter, Sheila; brother Bill (Mae); sister Betty O'Reilly, many nephews and nieces, friends and veterinary colleagues around the country. Jack was predeceased by his wife Betty (nee Kime); son Bill; parents, Maude and Walter, Betty's parents, Mabel and William Kime; and brothers Bud and George. Jack was born in Portage la Prairie on April 19, 1917. In high school, he played drums for the Portage College Institute Band. He loved spending time at the family cottage at Delta, and duck hunting each fall with Snerd (Al Snyder). He graduated from the Ontario Veterinary College in Guelph in 1940, and then joined the Health of Animals Branch of Agriculture Canada in Winnipeg where he worked on meat inspection. From 1947-1957, he was District Veterinarian in Yorkton, SK and then in Saskatoon, SK. Jack married Betty Kime on May 24, 1943 and created a strong family with Bill and Sheila in both Saskatchewan and Manitoba. His lifetime commitment to them and the veterinary profession was always evident. His sense of humour, honesty, and generosity to friends and family were his trademark. He was a good man, respected by family and friends and will be sadly missed. From 1958-1982, as District Veterinarian and Regional Veterinarian, Winnipeg, he was responsible for Contagious Diseases and was actively involved in the elimination of many named animal diseases from Manitoba and Saskatchewan, including Tuberculosis, Brucellosis and Foot and Mouth Disease. Jack and Betty loved travelling to Hawaii, England, Africa, Brazil, Spain and to Texas, New Orleans, New York and Montreal for Expo '67. They also took the Panama Canal and Alaska cruises. After 42 years he retired from the federal government and became Registrar of the Veterinary Medical Board of Manitoba, the regulatory body which acts on behalf of the public to monitor the quality of the veterinary practice. He volunteered with the Agriculture Committee of the Red River Exhibition in 1958 and he and Betty had the honour of hosting the Manitoba Farm Family from 1983 to 1988. He was a dedicated member of the Kinsmen Reh-Fit Centre for the last 25 years. Jack enjoyed watching his birds from the kitchen window, avidly read daily and weekly newspapers and magazines, and Sundays would not be complete without the Lawrence Welk show. Special thanks go to the Intensive Care Unit staff at Victoria General Hospital for their compassionate care. After cremation, a private family service will be held and he will be laid to rest with his wife Betty at Thomson In the Park . In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Jack's memory to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or CancerCare Manitoba.
