TERUO VINCENT HAYASHI (TERRY, POP, SPUD) Suddenly on December 25, 2005, Teruo Vincent Hayashi (Terry) left us to continue his journey. In passing he leaves to mourn his wife Marie and children, Annette, Lori (Paul), Gabriel, Florine (Joey), and Taffee (Wesley); his grandchildren, Randi, Matthew, Thomas, Draven, Erik and Byron; his sister Lillian (Bill Marsano) of New York City; brothers, Toshio (Judith) of Halifax, and James of Winnipeg; numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his Dad Ken in 1993, Mom Matsuyo in 1999 and brother Julian in 2005. Terry was born on August 3, 1941 in Mission City, BC. His family moved to Winnipeg in 1949 where he attended school and developed many lifelong friendships. He spent many years travelling and working on Canada's Arctic Dew Line as a chef and finally arrived in Grand Rapids in 1976 where he met the love of his life Marie. They spent 29 wonderful years together working side by side and raising a family. Terry and Marie are renowned in Grand Rapids and Area for their catering and culinary arts which began quite innocently by running the Concession at the Curling Rink. From there they moved on to manage the Esso Restaurant, the Grand Rapids Lodge, and most recently the Pelican Landing Restaurant. Terry was actively involved in numerous community organizations. He served on the Town Council, was an Associate Member of the Grand Rapids MMF Local, Board Member for the Cedar Lake Community Futures Development Cooperation and Board Member of the Grand Rapids Consumers Co-op Store. Terry was very artistic. The products of his creativity are proudly displayed throughout his home and property. Dream Catchers, keychains, wall hangings and pins of his Uglee Buglee's now hang in many homes of the travellers who passed through Grand Rapids Lodge. He loved working with wood and was constantly renovating and fixing the yard. He built a torii, a traditional Japanese gateway, in his yard to demonstrate his pride in his Japanese culture. He recently revitalized a tiny brook on his property, creating a small waterfall and added a bench where one could retreat for a few moments of solitude. He had a deep love for nature and spent countless hours outdoors. He built many bird houses and fed many foxes and birds. He loved to watch the eagles from his deck. Terry was on a constant quest for knowledge; always reading, exploring the internet. He developed a deep respect for the traditions of First Nations people. He learned the medicinal purposes of many of the plants and wildlife of the region. One of his favourite past times was to go out in the woods in the fall to hunt down the wild Matsutake mushrooms that are so coveted by the Japanese people, an activity he was introduced to many years ago by his parents. Terry loved to take pictures and this is attested by the 21 plus photo albums that he acquired. Every major family event can be found documented in one of these albums. Terry led a full and active life and gained the respect and admiration of all who knew him. He loved talking to people and spent many hours debating everything from politics to the weather over coffee at the Pelican. Honorary Pallbearers include Norman Einarson, Armond Legault, Art Hossack, Bruce Ballantyne, Bob Heisinger, Louie Grimard, Paul Singh, Wes Leask, Gabe Fleury, Thomas Fleury, Matthew Ferland, Bill McKay, Charles Campbell, Roxy Ballantyne, Joe Mercredi, Duncan Mercredi, Jack Mercredi, Steve Oniski, William Ferland, Joey Cook, Robbie Buck and Jim Sangster.
