LYLE ROSS It is with heavy hearts and deep sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Lyle on December 28, 2005 at the age of 60 years. Lyle is survived by his loving wife of 21 years, Sandra; his step-son Kevin Chorney and his wife Rhonda and their sons, Paul and Kyle; step-son Vince Chorney and his wife Paula; mother Helen Ross of Minnedosa; brother Brian (Ila); sisters, Carole (Ken), Lois (Dave) and Luci; mother in-law Annie Smith; sister in-law Flora Mitchell; brother in-law Elmer Smith (Edie) and many nieces and nephews. Lyle was predeceased by his father Donald in 1992 and brother Clayton in 2000. Lyle attended elementary school in Basswood and high school in Minnedosa. He also took a keen interest in 4-H and graduated from the Faculty of Agriculture at the U of M in 1967. After graduation he worked for a short term for the Department of Agriculture and then as a 4-H specialist in Red Deer and Winnipeg. Lyle then satisfied his urge to travel - his goal being to meet and talk to ordinary people around the world. He travelled extensively throughout Australia and surrounding islands, hiking through parts of Africa, toured the British Isles, parts of Europe and China. Lyle's love for the land and agriculture drew him back to the family farm in Basswood. Once actively farming, he became involved in the National Farmer's Union. It was important to him that the voice of the farmer be heard and his involvement in the organization was a passion of his. It was through the NFU that Lyle met Sandra. They married in October, 1984 and Lyle relocated to East Selkirk. Lyle's quiet, patient nature served him well as a farmer, school bus driver and a friend. He especially enjoyed spending time with his two grandsons and was looking forward to a third grandchild arriving in June. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held on Tuesday, January 3, 2006 at 1:00 p.m. at Sobering Funeral Chapel, 1035 Park Avenue East, Beausejour, MB. In lieu of flowers, if friends and family so desire, donations in Lyle's memory may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, 200 - 6 Donald St., Winnipeg, MB R3L 0K6. • I was looking to locate Lyle and Sandra when I stumbled on Lyle’s obituary …16 years after his death. Lyle and Sandra were host family for a program called Canada World Youth. They welcomed me and Gerardo Acuna (from Colombia) from September to December 1986 and for a few other days in March 1987. I was coming straight from Villeray, Montreal and this was my first experience living and working on a farm and it was absolutely marvelous. Lyle and Sandra were great host family, great people, generous of their place, their time and their life stories. I am keeping many, many wonderful memories of my time there....such as harvesting time and the extraordinary smell of freshly cut hay; feeding the sheep and the pigs; being scared of the geese; waking-up to miss Billy ('my goat') bleating as Lyle put 'her' in the trailer/camper to wake us up; drinking Baileys with Sandra and Lyle after a hard day at work; eating a lamb-roast made on the BBQ.... dancing on "Para bailar la Bamba" with the entire group in the leaving room on Sandra's old vinyl. Those were my first steps in discovering the world and I will never forget them...as I will never forget Lyle and Sandra.
