ALBERT BEDBROOK (BERT) Peacefully on Friday, December 30, 2005 with his beloved wife Sadie by his side, Bert passed away at home at the age of 88. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by his wife of 66 years, Sadie (nee Roddy) and sons, Richard (Linda), John (Colleen) and grandchildren, Wendy (Sean), Scott, Leah (Phillip) and Sean. He was predeceased by his beloved daughter Maureen. Bert was born in Winnipeg March 26, 1917. He had a varied military career having served in the Queens Own Camerons of Canada from 1934 to 1936 and was honourably discharged as a Corporal upon enlisting in the Permanent Force. Bert enlisted in C Battery Royal Canadian Horse Artillery Fort Osborne Barracks in Winnipeg in May of 1936. At the outbreak of hostilities in 1939 Bert volunteered for overseas service and embarked for Europe early in December of 1939, to be part of the First Canadian Division. He served as No. 1 (Gun Sergeant) throughout the Sicilian and Italian campaigns. After serving a few years in the European Theatre, Britain, France (Brest) and the Central Mediterranean Area he was awarded a number of campaign medals and the Army medal for Long Service and Good Conduct . Upon his return to Canada and during the period of the interim army , Bert transferred to the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps. Here he held many responsible positions and retired from the Army in 1960 with the rank of Staff Sergeant. After retirement from the Army, Bert was employed as a Civilian at the Regional Ordnance Depot in Winnipeg. On successfully competing for another position, he was employed as a buyer for the Department of Supply and Services. He retired from the Federal Public Service in 1976. In later years, he was a member of the Central Retired Fitness Club of the Central YMCA where he instructed fitness classes for seniors. Bert was also involved with many other organizations including The Royal Canadian Legion Brooklands and Weston Branch, The Monarchist League of Canada, Manitoba Schizophrenia Society Inc., and he was on the executive of the RCHA Association for many years. He served his Church faithfully (First English Lutheran) for many years as a member of the Church Council. Bert was an honest, hardworking, devoted family man who cherished every moment of his life. He was strong in his beliefs and was gifted with an ability to communicate them through writing. He was a great friend and neighbour, well respected by all that knew him. Funeral services will be held at Thomson Funeral Home, 669 Broadway on Wednesday January 4, 2006 at 1:00 p.m. with interment at Brookside Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Bert's memory to the Parkinson Society of Manitoba, 301- 171 Donald St., Winnipeg, MB R3C 1M4, or a charity of your choice.
