SYLVIA (SOLVEIG) JONA DELARONDE (nee THORDARSON) Peacefully, on Saturday, December 31, 2005 at the Betel Home in Selkirk, with family by her side, Sylvia (Solveig) Jona DeLaronde went to be with her husband Joe (1996) to continue their journey together. Sylvia is survived by her daughter Helen Walker of Petersfield; son Joe (Lu) DeLaronde of Selkirk (and extended family of Winnipeg); brother Fanuel (Myrtle) Thordarson of Winnipeg; grandchildren, Joanne (Wayne) Ksionzek, Diane (Tom) Wark, Pat (Rob) Sareault, Chris (Diane) Walker, Joey and Darrel DeLaronde and Deanna (Kelly) Gabora; great-grandchildren, Tim and Denessa Ksionzek, Jason DeLaronde, Cole and Ryan Wark, Joclyn and Jill Sareault, Rhonda (Mark), Dustin and Daniel Walker and Ryane Gabora; great-great-grandchildren, Braeden, Kaliegh and Nolan. Sylvia was born at Hecla Island on March 10, 1910. Until her death, she was the oldest living survivor of the first settlers born at Hecla. Sylvia and Joe were married January 28, 1934 at the Hecla Church. They resided at Hecla until 1947 when they moved to Selkirk. Amma was a member of the ANAF Unit 151, Selkirk Branch and a life member of the Legion Ladies Auxillary, Selkirk Branch # 42. Everybody's Amma never greeted anyone with hello, it was always, are you hungry? She was very well known for her vinarterta, crocheting and knitting, never watching the needles, yet never dropping a stitch or part of any conversation. Anyone who came to know Amma, probably received some of her work. In keeping with Amma's wishes, cremation has taken place and no public service will be held. A private family service will be held at a later date. The family would like to invite friend's and relatives to join in a Celebration of Amma's life at the Lutheran Hall, Manitoba Ave. Selkirk, MB on Wednesday, January 4, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. for coffee and dainties. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Selkirk Evangelical Lutheran Church, 329 Clandeboye Ave. Selkirk, R1A 0X5. Special thank you to the nurses and staff at the Selkirk Betel Home for their care and patience shown to Amma and her family. Gilbart Funeral Home, Selkirk in care of arrangements.

Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • I was sorry to learn that Sylvia had died. She was a kind and gentle person with a warm heart and a generous hand, she will be missed. It was nice to visit Sylvia, she was a gracious hostess. Even after her eyes were failing she served a great meal. Her husband, Joe, came from my hometown and we met when I worked on Lake Winnipeg in 1944. To the family, I say may it bring you some comfort to know how many warm and caring thoughts go out to you in your time of sorrow. Sincerely, Gunnar - Posted by: Gunnar Thorvaldson (Family) on: Jan 06, 2006
