THELMA MARGARET O'BRIEN 1915 - 2005 Thelma Margaret O'Brien was born November 20, 1915, in Brandon, MB to Myrtle and John O'Brien. She was predeceased by her parents and her three sisters, Marjory (Penny), Ada (Cleghorn) and Alice (Pratt). She leaves to mourn her very special goddaughter Shelley Muir; nieces, Pearl (Silvio), Shirley (Sam), Laura (Colin) and Linda (John); nephews, Burt (Marilyn) and Donald (Donna); and various grandnieces and grandnephews. Thelma grew up in the South Beresford area where her parents farmed. She attended South Beresford School with her three sisters and then moved onto high school in Souris. She graduated from grade 12 at the age of 15, entering the University of Manitoba at the age of 18. Thelma graduated from the University of Manitoba in 1944, receiving her degree in Pharmacy. Her early career in Pharmacy was spent at Brathwaites in Winnipeg. Her adventurous nature led her to spend a year in London, England on a working vacation in the 1950s and then it was back to Winnipeg where she joined Eaton's Pharmacy. She worked at Eaton's until the end of her career in the mid 1980s. Travel was a large part of Thelma's life with trips to many different parts of the world including Hawaii, Florida, the Caribbean, Peru and many trips to Europe and the British Isles. Many of these trips involved Thelma's passion in life, golf. Thelma was a longtime member of the Charleswood GC starting in the 1940s and continuing until its demise in 2001. For over 50 years she was passionately involved in the life of the club, enriched by her time with her many dear friends, and in turn, enriching the lives of other members through her friendship and her contributions to the club. Other passions that added greatly to Thelma's life were her love of bridge and art, both creative endeavours that she excelled in. Thelma was also a member of the Zonta club for many years, and more recently the Aurora club, both volunteer organizations that she was proud to be a part of. Through these memberships she exercised her generous nature, giving back to society through the charitable values of these organizations. Thelma will be remembered, by all those who knew her, for her independent spirit, sense of humour and caring nature. Friends and family, both, will miss her. Cremation has taken place and a celebration of her life will take place at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 11 at the Charleswood Legion, Branch 100, 6003 Roblin Blvd. Interment will take place in the family plot in Souris. In lieu of flowers, condolences may be sent to Pearl Sboto, 335 16th St., Brandon, MB R7A 4X7. Donations may be made to either the Winnipeg Humane Society or CancerCare Manitoba.
