PHYLLIS THERESA TUTKALUK It is with great sadness that we announce that on December 30, 2005, Phyllis Theresa Tutkaluk slid peacefully from our world after a courageous battle with cancer. Phyllis was born on December 9, 1940, to Roy and Annie Wowryk of Kelloe, MB. As the second youngest child of a family of 21, Phyllis grew up in a household filled with activity. She attended school in a one-room schoolhouse near the family farm in Kelloe. When that school closed, Phyllis moved into Shoal Lake with her sister Sophie where they finished the final years of their schooling. After graduation, Phyllis worked at the hotel in Shoal Lake, which allowed her to work with the public. In 1961, Phyllis met and married Nester Tutkaluk and the two settled down to live on the Tutkaluk family farm in Oakburn, MB. During the early years of their marriage, Phyllis and Nester worked together on the family farm. In 1967, Phyllis began working in Shoal Lake at Menzies' Store, which was later renamed Preston's Place. Phyllis held her position as sales clerk in these stores for 35 years. During their married years Phyllis and Nester were pleased to introduce a son, Nolan Nester into their family. Phyllis was an avid golfer, and could often be found on the golf course in Shoal Lake. Phyllis was also very active in the Ukrainian Orthodox Ladies Group. She served as the treasurer for many years. When she wasn't working, traveling, golfing, curling or working with the church ladies, Phyllis could be found on the farm working in her gardens or caring for her pets. Phyllis took great pride in caring for her home and making it a welcoming place. One of the greatest joys in Phyllis' life was looking after her family. She was completely unselfish in her care for others. Phyllis would allow herself to take the backseat when one of her family members needed her. She continuously looked out for her son and husband and did her best to ensure that they were well taken care of. Phyllis experienced a very happy day the day her son married Tammy, whom she had already welcomed into the family. One of her greatest regrets is that she had to leave them behind without her to care for them. Phyllis has left to mourn her passing her husband Nester, her son Nolan and his wife Tammy. She also leaves to mourn her sisters, Mary Nychuk, Jeannie Paraschuk, Sophie Zenchyshyn and Stella Hildebrand; along with brothers, Frank, Elmer, Eddie, Nester and Peter Wowryk. Her parents; sisters, Helen Wowryk, Rose Grant and Teena Klaassen; as well as brothers, Mike, Joe, Harry, Stan, Johnny, Dick, Bill and Lorne Wowryk predeceased her. The funeral service was held on January 3, 2006, from St. Volodymyr's Ukrainian Orthodox Church, Oakburn, with Very Rev. Father Mitred Archpriest Nicholas Orest Rauliuk officiating. Interment followed in St. Volodymyr's Ukrainian Orthodox Cemetery in Oakburn, MB. Pallbearers were nephews Bob Monkmon, Brent Zenchyshyn, John Gill, Jim Lane, and friends of the family David Sytnyk and Jerry Gandza. Michael Sytnyk was cross-bearer. Rae's Funeral Service of Shoal Lake was in care of the arrangements.
