HELEN A. SHALAPATA (nee KEENES) January 28, 1919 - January 5, 2006 On Thursday, January 5, 2006 at Central Park Lodge, Helen Shalapata passed away at the age of 86 years. Helen is survived by her children, Fred (Jeanette), Linda, David (Sheila), and Wilfred; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and numerous relatives in Canada and the United States. She was predeceased by her husband John in 1969; sister Nellie; brother Ernie; and parents, Ethel and Wilfred Keenes. In her early years, Helen worked in a Moose Factory and later, for the N.D.P. After she and John were married in July 1946, she devoted her time to being a homemaker to her children and the many handicapped children that she took in for many years. Helen was a member of the Eastern Star, and a White Shrine Member in good standing for the Mentally Challenged Association. She was also very instrumental in the planning and construction for the low-income housing developments in Tuxedo. The family would like to thank the staff on the 1st and 4th floor of Central Park Lodge on Edmonton Street for their great care and kindness to Mom over the past three years during her stay there. A funeral service will be held on Monday, January 9, at 2:00 p.m. at the Glen Eden Funeral Home with interment and reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Helen to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba, 10-120 Donald Street, Wpg. MB R3C 4G2.
