SISTER MARY CHARLES, R.N.D.M. (nee PHYLLIS MARIE GREEN) Sister Mary Charles died peacefully at St. Boniface Hospital on January 7, 2006 after a painful struggle with cancer. Mary Charles, born September 1, 1931, joined the Sisters of Our Lady of the Missions and dedicated her life to God when she celebrated her professions of vows at Sacred Heart College in Regina, July 26, 1954. In the years following, Mary Charles served as a teacher in Brandon (commercial arts) (1955 to 1958); as laundress at Sacred Heart Academy (1958 to 1960); St. Joseph's, Saskatoon (1960 to 1963) and at St. Edward's Convent in Winnipeg (1963 to 2005). While serving her community in a variety of household chores, Mary Charles is remembered most for the simplicity of her lifestyle and for her passion for the poor in the city. She delivered bread to the hungry, received and distributed clothing, prepared Christmas hampers and made friends with the needy. Sister Mary Charles is predeceased by her parents, Edna and Harold in 1964; and by her brother Stanley in 2005. She is survived by her sisters, Evelyn (Sisters of Our Lady of the Missions), Beatrice and Edna (Charles) Green; her sister-in-law Jean (Janina) Green; niece Monica (Del) Hennessey; nephews, David (Marian) Green, Mark (Heather) Green; grandnephews, Desmond and Matthew; grandnieces, Micaela and Jenna. As we bid farewell to Sister Mary Charles, we are particularly grateful to all who accompanied her in illness, the doctors, nurses and staff at St. Boniface Hospital and her family and friends. To honour the memory of Sister Mary Charles' ministry to the poor, donations can be made to the Sisters of Our Lady of the Missions (Solidarity Fund) or to the Christmas Cheer Board. Prayer vigil will be held Monday, January 9 at 6:00 p.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main St. The Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at St. Edward's Church on Tuesday, January 10 at 2:00 p.m. Burial will follow at Assumption Cemetery, 3990 Portage Ave. CROPO FUNERAL CHAPEL 586-8044
