LONA SHAFER (nee MOONAY) June 21, 1931 - January 8, 2006 With deep sadness we announce the passing of Lona, our beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and sister, at the age of 74. She leaves to cherish her memory, her husband, Allan, daughters Maureen (David) and Lesli (Don), sister Deanna (Saul), her five grandchildren Rakel, Jordan, Dana, Alix, and Max, and many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends. Lona was born in Fosten, SK to Bert and Betty Moonay, the eldest of two daughters. The family moved to Winnipeg in 1943 and she attended St John's Tec and then Business College, graduating in 1950. Lona and Allan were married in 1952 and recently celebrated their 54th anniversary. The early years of her marriage were spent both raising her daughters and dedicating much of her time to community volunteer work. Notably, in the 1960's, she assumed both the presidencies of her Haddasah chapter as well as Shaarey Zedek Sisterhood. In 1971, she took on the role of Executive Director of Shaarey Zedek Synagogue. What began as a short term, part time, position evolved into an 11 year, full time career. She tackled this job as she did all others, with extreme dedication and enthusiasm. Known for her exceptional organization and kindness, she was deeply valued by those she served. Throughout her life, Lona remained active on many levels; her three loves being reading, gardening, and knitting. Lona enjoyed a full and rewarding life and was at her best when spending time with her adored grandchildren. She enriched all of our lives in many ways and will be greatly missed. Special thanks to Helen Espela for her care and companionship. The family would also like to thank Dr. F. Ross for his compassion, Drs. Hamedami and Joshua, and the staff of 5N at Grace Hospital. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, January 11 at 2:00 p.m. at Shaarey Zedek Synagogue (corner of Wellington Cres. and Academy Rd.). In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Children's Wish Foundation at 945-9474 or to the Sunshine Fund at 784-1130.
