And thanks to Iona, My beloved wife, Who took the rough With the smooth, With a smile. - Peter Peter Thomas John Christopher Plumbly Warner, beloved husband of Iona (nee Henderson) passed away at his residence on Monday, January 9, 2006. He is survived by his wife Iona and by his children, Susanna of Calgary, Ianthe of Winnipeg, Willy (Abby) of Idaho, USA; Sarah (Tom Kobar) of The Pas, Charlotte of Winnipeg, and Oenone of Halifax. His grandchildren, Elizabeth, Kimberly, Samantha, Peter; great-grandchildren Alex and Jordyn. Dr. Peter Warner MD (Gold Medal), PhD, FRCPath, FAPHA, FASCP, FAAM, a distinguished pathologist whose remarkable career spanned six decades on three continents, carried a strong background in laboratory medicine and a special interest in public and environmental health. His work covered diverse areas within the public and private sectors as a scholar, administrator and consultant. For these efforts, Peter was appointed an Honorary Member of the Canadian Medical Association as well as honoured with the Canadian Centennial Medal, in recognition of valuable services to the nation . Peter Warner, though born in Winnipeg, left as an infant and was raised and educated in England at Cranleigh School and Middlesex Hospital Medical School (University of London) where he worked in cancer research until he came to Canada in 1952. From 1952 to 1955 he was a pathologist in Sudbury, ON and Winnipeg, MB at the General Hospitals. From 1955 to 1958 he worked in Australia as head of the Medical Research Division in the Institute of Medical and Veterinary Science in Adelaide, South Australia. Upon returning to Manitoba, he became Director of the Department of Bacteriology at Winnipeg General Hospital, and Associate professor, Bacteriology and Immunology at the University of Manitoba. Dr. Warner subsequently served as Medical Director of the School of Medical Laboratory Technology, Manitoba Institute of Technology; Director of Health Services with the Manitoba government; Assistant Deputy Minister, Public Health; and First Chairman of the Clean Environment Commission. Dr. Warner spent seven years as Assistant Regional Director in the Manitoba office of Health and Welfare Canada. He then returned to the Manitoba government, serving as Director of Environmental Health Services, Chief Medical Officer of Health and Chief Occupational Medical Officer. He also sat on the federal-provincial Committee on Environmental and Occupational Health, and was Regional Medical Advisor to the Atomic Energy Control Board of Canada. After two years in Private Consulting, he joined Trainor Laboratory in 1973 and provided a part-time and consulting service until his death. Dr. Warner was also an Associate Editor of the Canadian Journal of Microbiology , the Editor of the Manitoba Medical Review , recognized as an Honorary President of the Manitoba Branch of the Canadian Society of Technologists, served as President of the Wildwood Community Club, and was a founding President of the Fort Garry Minor Hockey Association. A reception to remember Peter will be held on Friday, January 13, 2006 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. with memories shared at 6:00 p.m. at Neil Bardal Inc., 984 Portage Ave., Aubrey Street entrance. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Peter's name to the Society for Manitobans with Disabilities, 825 Sherbrook St., R3A 1M5 or the Manitoba Cancer Research Foundation, 100 Olivia St., R3E 0V9.
