ROBERT (BOB) ALLAN BLACK With heavy hearts we announce the passing of our husband, father and grandfather on Monday, January 16, 2006 at the St. Boniface General Hospital at the age of 77 years. Remaining to forever cherish in Bob's memory are his beloved wife, Vivian Black (nee Arthur); father of Allan (Brenda) Black and Linda (Neal) Brennan; grandfather of Rory and Kurtis Brennan and Joel and Jillian Black; his amazing enthusiasm and compassion for all others will live on in our hearts and minds. Predeceased by parents James and Agnes Black; brother Jim, and sisters Jeanette Hardy and June Oswald. Born on June 14, 1928, Bob grew up in the west end and lived his entire life in Winnipeg. At the age of 18, he met his one and only love, Vivian at a social gathering at the old YWCA. In 2002 they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. A genuine and selfless man, he will be remembered by many. As a founding member of the Optimist Club of Assiniboia in 1964, Bob spent endless hours, both on the executive, and most recently as a dedicated volunteer at the Buffalo Barbeque and the Christmas Tree lot, raising funds to support youth programs in the community. After having worked for many years in the textile brokerage industry, Bob formed R.A. Black Textiles (1982) Ltd., and made many lasting friendships with business associates within the industry. Over the years as Allan and Linda grew up, Bob and Vivian enjoyed entertaining, and their home was often filled with great friends, music and singing. One of his prized possessions, Bob's collection of albums filled the family home with big-band tunes and classic crooners. Bob and Vivian loved to travel, and shared many adventures around the world as a couple, as well as with family and friends. We will have lasting memories of beaches, swimming pools, and Disney Resorts, where grandchildren laughed and played with grandma and grandpa for hours on end. The family welcomes you to join us at a funeral service being held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 21 in Sturgeon Creek United Church, 207 Thompson Drive. We would like to express our sincere appreciation for the loving and compassionate care given to Bob by Dr. George and the staff at Grace Hospital and Dr. Jana Pilkey and the Palliative Care staff on the 8th floor of St. Boniface. Donations may be made in Bob's memory to the CancerCare Manitoba, 109 - 675 McDermot Ave, Winnipeg, MB, R3E 0V9. The Optimist Creed Promise Yourself - To be so strong that nothing can disturb your peace of mind. To talk health, happiness and prosperity to every person you meet. To make all your friends feel that there is something in them. To look at the sunny side of everything and make your optimism come true. To think only of the best, to work only for the best, and to expect only the best. To be just as enthusiastic about the success of others as you are about your own. To forget the mistakes of the past and press on to the greater achievements of the future. To wear a cheerful countenance at all times and give every living creature you meet a smile. To give so much time to the improvement of yourself that you have no time to criticize others. To be too large for worry, too noble for anger, too strong for fear, and too happy to permit the presence of trouble.
