Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryWALTER RAYMOND (ROY) HASLUND Peacefully, with his beloved wife Cora, at his side, Roy Haslund passed away on Monday, January 16, 2006 in the Riverview Health Centre, at the age of 85 years. Roy is survived by his loving family, wife Cora; son Brian; sisters, Joyce Bruce and Edith (George) Hansen and their families. He will also be missed by his in-laws, the Boen family. Roy was predeceased by his parents, Alfred and Anna (Tronrud) Haslund; brother Archie and wife Phyllis and brother-in-law Pat Bruce. Roy was born on December 2, 1920 in Inwood, MB. He left home in 1941 to join the R.C.A.F. as a radar mechanic. He served as a Sergeant in the United Kingdom and Middle East. Upon his return to Inwood, he met Cora Boen. They married in June 1946, and their son Brian, was born a year later. They moved to Woodhaven in 1950 to live in the home that Roy was in the process of building, which he finished in 1951. Roy took great pleasure in maintaining his home and beautiful gardens until ill health forced him to leave last summer. Roy was in charge of the Paint Department at Headingley Correctional Institute for 28 years. Since retiring, he has regularly attended the Manitoba Government retiree's luncheons. For over 30 years, Roy has served as a board member for the Maitland B. Steinkopf Residence organization. As a member of the Maintenance Committee, he volunteered his time and carpentry skills to the homes. Roy has always been generous in volunteering in this manner, having spent countless hours in the building of the original Woodhaven Community Club. Family and friends have also benefited from his generosity. Shortly after the completion of the Woodhaven Community Club, Roy and Cora took up square dancing there. In a few short years, Roy became a popular and accomplished square and round dance caller and teacher. Over the next 35 years, his calling took them to many places in Canada, the United States and as far away as Austria. Roy loved to travel. In the early years, it was camping. In the later years, cruises and Branson were favourite choices. As well as for practical purposes, working with wood was a hobby for Roy. He turned varieties of driftwood into beautiful vases and bowls. He made clocks from burls and picture frames for Cora's handiwork. Roy had a passion for country music. Friends gathered in the Haslund basement to sing. There was always someone to play the piano and various other instruments, with Roy on guitar and Brian playing the accordion or chord organ. Roy had many skills and strove for excellence in every undertaking. His integrity and dependability were unwavering. With staunch determination, he lived each day the best he could in spite of his failing health. Throughout his lifetime, he made many dear friends. He was an inspiration to both family and friends. He will be missed by all. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 21, at 12:30 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave. A reception will follow. In lieu of flowers, donations would be appreciated to Maitland B. Steinkopf Residence, 9-213 St. Mary's Rd., Winnipeg, MB R2H 1J2 or a charity of your choice.
