Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemorySHIRLEY ELSA HANSLIP (nee KEHLER) October 9, 1935 - January 17, 2006 It is with grieving hearts we announce the sudden passing of Shirley Hanslip beloved wife of John Hanslip on Tuesday, January 17, 2006, at the age of 70 years. Shirley was born October 9, 1935 in Ashern, MB, the oldest of five children. She grew up in the Oatfield area and attended Dog Lake School. In her younger years, Mom enjoyed playing baseball with her friend Marjorie Cook. Shirley moved to Eriksdale in 1953 and began working as a housekeeper for Bill and Edie Goodridge and later worked in Bill's Confectionary Store. In 1954 Shirley met John and they started dating. Mom moved to Winnipeg in 1957 where she worked for a few months. She then moved back to Eriksdale and on June 8, 1957 John and Shirley were married in the Eriksdale United Church. Together they moved west of Eriksdale and began farming and raising a family. Shirley also worked at the Eriksdale Hospital as a Nurses' Aid for 10 years. While she worked there, she always tried to ensure that the best of care was given to each and every patient. It always delighted her when John would pick wild roses and tiger lilies and bring them home. Shirley and John were constant companions through all life's challenges. When Shirley was not working at the hospital, you could always find her in the kitchen baking her famous cookies. This always made her grandchildren smile. When she wasn't in the kitchen she enjoyed spending time outside either in the garden or planting her favourite flowers. Our Mom was a quiet, gracious lady. She took great joy in keeping track of the events and changes in her family's lives. She touched everyone she knew with her kindness and love. She will be deeply missed. Shirley will be lovingly remembered by her husband John of 48 years. In addition, her daughters, Diane (Brian) Bottrell, Sheila Hanslip and son Ken (Anita) Hanslip; grandchildren, Michelle, Samantha, Alexandria, Austin and Autumn. She will be sadly missed by her brothers and sisters, Ernest Kehler, Sophia McFadyen, Walter (Eleanor) Kehler, Delma Kehler; her sisters-in-law, Lillian Casselman and Pearl Heroux; as well as aunts, uncles, cousins and numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Shirley was predeceased by her parents, Jack Kehler in 1987 and Lydia Kehler in 1999, sisters and brothers-in-law, Elsie Kehler, Don McFadyen, Lottie and Ed Yaworski, Stan Dowsett, Elva and Rick Lindell, Cliff Casselman, Lyman Heroux and Margaret and Bill Van De Vooren. Friends and relatives may pay their respects between 7:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 24 at the Arnason Funeral Home in Ashern. Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 25 at the Eriksdale Recreational Centre with Melanie Kauppila officiating. Viewing will be held one hour prior to the service at the hall. Interment to follow in the Eriksdale Municipal Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Bob Saunders, Ron Heroux, Albert Moman, Rick Willetts, Arnold Larson and Glen Kingsley. The family would like to extend our hands in appreciation for the excellent care Shirley received from all the medical staff at the various care units.
