Surrounded by his family, Winston Francis Coutts Sr. passed away peacefully at the age of 93 at West Park Manor on January 19, 2006. He was predeceased by his wife Marguerite in 2002, his son Winston Jr. (Mona) in 2004 and his eleven brothers and sisters. Winston was born in Winnipeg to Donald and Leslie Coutts (nee McKay). He grew up in Winnipeg and graduated from the University of Manitoba in 1933, winning the Ephriam Buckwold Gold Medal for Economics. Winston commenced his career working for the Hudson's Bay Company where he met his future wife Marguerite Muller whom he married in 1938. Recruited by the National Cash Register Company (NCR), Winston together with Marguerite spent the next forty years working and raising a family in London, Toronto, St. Thomas, Ottawa, Montreal and North Bay. He returned with his family to Winnipeg in 1968 as Prairie District Director. After his retirement in 1977, he generously volunteered as Financial Comptroller of St. John Brebeuf Church and School, working for the parish with our mother Marguerite until 1993. In his later years Dad became renowned and appreciated as the piano man at The Wellington and later at West Park Manor where he entertained his community on a daily basis. More than anything his life was defined by his strong sense of family; their successes were his successes and their challenges were his challenges.
