Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryHARRY JAMES LAWRIE LUDLOW Peacefully, our loving Husband, Dad and Grandpa passed away in the early hours of Saturday, January 21, 2006 at the Health Sciences Centre. Dad will be greatly missed by his wife Margaret; his two sons, Jim (Lynn) and Rob (Carrie) of Winnipeg and his daughter Carolyn (Jamie) of Waterford, Vermont. He was immensely proud of his nine grandchildren and will be lovingly remembered by Cedric, Charlie, Finona, Amanda, Shelby, Hayden, Faith, Caleigh and Keaton. Dad was predeceased by his mother Pearl Glendorah in 1976; his father John in 1959 and his two older brothers, Calvin and John both of whom passed away at very young ages prior to Dad being born. Dad was born in Winnipeg on August 7, 1922. He was raised on Inkster Boulevard in Winnipeg's North End during the Depression and attended both Luxton School and St. John's Tech. At the University of Manitoba, Dad attended in the Faculty of Science before his education was interrupted by the War where he served in the R.C.A.F. as a navigation instructor. In 1945 he resumed his education at the U. of M. graduating in 1947 from the Faculty of Law. As a young man Dad was an avid tennis and badminton player and as a child spent many long and lazy summers fishing off the pier in Gimli. While in University Dad was also an expert marksman and it was in this endeavour that he received his letters from the U. of M. This ability also led to many duck hunting adventures in the 1950's and 1960's at the Delta Marsh with his old friend Alec Thorarinson. For many years curling was also a passion in the leagues down at the Winnipeg Winter Club. In 1954 Mom and Dad met at the Winnipeg Badminton Club and dated for two years before they were married in February of 1956. They were together for 49 years and 11 months and were to have celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary this February. In their almost 50 years together they shared a love of family, friends, travel and the Lake. In the early years there were many family driving trips to Florida and Banff along with a number of family Christmases in Hawaii. As the children grew older Mom and Dad had more time to expand their travel horizons to Europe, Asia and Australia, cruises in the Caribbean and extended stays in Florida. Summers were always at the Lake. Many will remember long summer weekends at family cottages in Gimli and Lake of the Woods, water skiing and barbecuing - Dad always had the bacon and eggs on for breakfast and hot dogs on the dock for lunch - his early morning work projects at the cottage were legendary. Dad's last summer weekend was in August of 2005 at the family cottage on Clearwater Bay. Dad was ever so proud of his working career as a lawyer and his long standing membership in the Law Society of Manitoba. After his call to the Bar, he carried on a private practice in Winnipeg, working faithfully and diligently on behalf of his clients for 47 years before his official retirement in 1994. For 25 of those years he also enjoyed carrying on a second practice in Gimli dutifully driving to Gimli on Fridays on behalf of his clients in the Interlake. Dad's personal life outside the home was defined by the Shrine and the lifelong friendships he made and cherished as a Mason and Shriner. Dad and Mom thoroughly enjoyed the company of their many friends and recently he spoke frequently and lovingly of all of their times together and how important these friendships were to him. Above all else Dad lived his life unselfishly and for others and always for his family first. He was very proud of his children, their spouses and his grandchildren and spoke of this often. He was generous, kind and thoughtful and always there to provide for, lend encouragement and a helping hand to family and friends wherever needed. Dad's heart was always in the right place. Although he lost the battle, in the last few weeks of his brief illness Dad fought courageously and with determination. Our thanks as a family goes out to the nursing staff at the GD3 Trauma Unit at the Health Sciences Centre. Their kindness and consideration provided Dad and all of us with great comfort in the last few weeks of his life. Dad's funeral service celebrating his 83 years of life will be held at St. Andrew's River Heights United Church, 255 Oak St. on Friday, January 27 at 2:00 p.m. A private interment will be held following the service at Elmwood Cemetery. Pallbearers are Klein Virtue, Bob Lowey, Erv Lobson, Joe Hyde, John Gilbert and Ralph Booden. Honorary pallbearers are Norm Lobson, Barry Chalmers, John Metelnick and Norman Gilbert. The honorary bagpiper for the service is George Patterson. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Dad's memory to The Shriners Transportation Fund c/o Khartum Shriners, 1155 Wilkes Ave., Winnipeg, MB, R3P 1B9 Those you love don't go away They walk beside you every day.
