Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemorySHIRLEY SMITH Shirley Mary Hope Smith (nee McVicar), born in Winnipeg July 22, 1930. Passed away peacefully January 25, 2006 after a brief illness. Shirley has joined her husband and soul mate Donald McKenzie Smith who predeceased her in 1999. She is survived by her son Gary (Carol); daughter Lorraine (Van) Whitehead; grandchildren, Ryan, Graeme and Kristen Smith; sister Mae (Jim) Moffatt, and brother Bob (Muriel) McVicar; sister-in-law Margaret Smith and many nieces and nephews and good friends. Shirley grew up in farming communities in Manitoba. She attended high school at Kelvin High School and was married in 1950. She was employed at Great West Life before joining her husband in the family electrical business. Shirley and Don spent many years travelling around the United States and Canada in their camper truck. Shirley was an avid outdoors person, who enjoyed speed skating, biking, hiking in the Grand Canyon, snowshoeing and gardening. She was a talented seamstress, winning prizes in her youth. She was a voracious reader, and most recently tended the library in her Senior's building. Her happiest days were spent at the cottage, first at Pinawa Bay and later at Sandy Hook, where she nurtured her garden and watched the pelicans float past. She loved to have her family and friends visit there and could be seen sitting on the deck with a book in her hands, waiting for their arrival. Thank you to Josephina and Brenda, her home-care worker and nurse who tended to her so well. Many thanks to the doctors and nurses at Riverview Health Centre who made her last days comfortable. A memorial service will be held on Monday, January 30, at Thomson Funeral Home, 669 Broadway, at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations to enable children to attend summer camp may be made to: Sunshine Fund, 701A Westminster Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3G 1A3.
