PAULINE DOWHOPOLUK (nee MARKO) June 18, 1916 - January 26, 2006 Peacefully, on Thursday, January 26, 2006, surrounded by her loving family, our beloved mother and grandmother, Pauline Dowhopoluk, passed away at Concordia Place Care Centre at the age of 89 years. She leaves to mourn her passing and cherish her memory, her daughter Eleanor Solana-Martin, granddaughter Carmen (Greg); son William and grandson Michael. Pauline will also be missed by her sisters-in-law, Nettie Marko and Helen Schmon; many nieces, nephews and friends. Pauline was predeceased by her parents Catherine and Michael Marko; husband Alexander; son-in-law Antonio; daughter-in-law Vivian; brothers, John, Fred and Peter; and sisters, Anne and Mary. Pauline was born in Hamirlik, MB, on June 18, 1916. At the age of 18, she left the family farm and moved to Winnipeg. She married Alexander Dowhopoluk in 1935. They operated a grocery store in Winnipeg for seven years. In 1945, they moved to Transcona where they opened Alex's Grocery, a business they operated successfully for 38 years. The store became a Transcona institution, a meeting place for young and old. Pauline was a woman of many talents. Her energy was boundless. She was a successful seamstress and knitter, an avid gardener who loved to share the bounty from her prolific garden, an exceptional cook, with Ukrainian dishes her specialty. She also enjoyed the outdoors - picking blueberries and wild mushrooms. Pauline was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Family was of utmost importance to her all her life. The birth of her grandchildren brought her much joy. After retirement, travel became an exciting part of Pauline's life. She enjoyed her visits to Banff, Jasper, the Okanogan, Mexico, Florida, Texas, Hawaii and the Ukraine. After her husband Alex's death in 1988, Pauline continued to live in her own home to the age of 87. She was proud of her honorary life membership from the Retired Citizens Association of Transcona. The family wishes to express sincere thanks to all those involved in providing the excellent care, comfort, compassion and kindness to Pauline during her stay at Misericordia and Concordia Place Personal Care Centres during the past two years. Funeral service will be held on Tuesday, January 31 at 10:30 a.m. at the Transcona Funeral Chapel, 1800 Day St., with Chaplain Paul Martin officiating. Interment to follow at Transcona Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Earne Marko, Russell Marko, David Kernaghan, Robert Bilodeau, Josh McCullough and Morris Kulbaba. Honorary pallbearers will be Jeff McCullough and Al Darker. In lieu of flowers, if friends so wish, memorial donations made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or CancerCare Manitoba would be appreciated. Vichnaya Pam'Yat Transcona Funeral Chapel in care of arrangements.
