CARL FREDRICK SMITH 1929 - 2006 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our husband, father and grandfather. On Friday, January 27, 2006, at the age of 76, he passed away leaving behind his beloved wife Yvonne (Watson) and their four children, Carolyn (Mark), Brenda (Bruno), Bradley (Valerie) and Kristina. He will also be deeply missed by his 10 grandchildren who adored him beyond life itself; Matthew (Elyse), Chelsea, Melissa, Graham, Allison, Hillary, Julianne, Connor, Victoria-Lynn and Brittany. He is survived by his one and only sister Almine Schaf. He was predeceased by his mother and father, Charles and Anna Smith. Carl was born in Winnipeg and resided on Inkster Boulevard until he married the love of his life Yvonne Fay Watson. They were married for 51 years and they made a happy home at 11 Crocus St. He attended Ralph Brown, Faraday, St. John's High School and the University of Manitoba where he obtained his Bachelor of Education. He taught school at Earl Grey and Kelvin High in the science department. His passion was Biology and he was a firm believer in the creation theory. He became vice principal of Kelvin High School, then principal at Brock-Corydon and finally principal at Norquay where he enjoyed working in the inner city for 10 years. Carl was the organist at Zion Lutheran Church in Winnipeg for 42 years and was a founding member of the congregation. His strong dedication to his Christian faith was a testament to all who knew him. Carl was an avid hunter and fisherman but most of all a fine woodworker who created and built many treasures for his family to enjoy. For many years he enjoyed camping with his family. Blue Lake, ON was the traditional spot for our summer holidays. He delegated himself as the wagonmaster for his Keeodles (grandchildren) where he entertained them with countless crafts and activities. Carl and Yvonne wintered for 14 years of their retirement in Mesa, AZ at Valle del Oro RV park where they were fortunate to have made many long-lasting friendships. The family would like to extend a special thanks to the invaluable support of Dr. Barry McMillan and Rhonda, the Palliative Care team of St. Boniface Hospital, Dr. Paul Daeninck and Tracy Chornopyski, Tracey Legary and visiting nurse Tammie-Lee, and all the staff on 8A at the St. Boniface Hospital. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held on Thursday, February 2 at 2:00 p.m., at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 2528 King Edward St. If friends so desire, memorials may be made to the Immanuel Lutheran Church memorial fund to assist in the construction of a new multi-purpose room. Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give you light. Arrangements have been entrusted to Cropo Funeral Chapel.

Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • Mr. Smith was my science teacher.(& my husband's, Jim Stebbing ).....and a teacher of life. He was so well respected by all of his students. His name is always on our lips to this day when reminiscing. He tore up my application for Home Economics and said "apply for chemistry ", and I did. He really cared and knew his students abilities. I've always been grateful as my first studies were in Nursing at St. Boniface and I would have never been accepted without chemistry! He was exceptionally motivational and encouraging. He made one believe they could be anything they wanted to be.....and they did. Jim graduated with a Gold Medal in Engineering, and spent his life designing Nuclear Safety Systems. I co-ordinated and designed programs for Public Health Clinical Services and later for Sheridan Colleges, co-ordinating Health Services departments. Our son is a lawyer for the people, and our daughter is a survivor and works in the legal field. Both have values Mr. Smith would have taught us. It was such a privilege to know him. I hope you feel his spirit as you read the ripples that have gone out from him and still live on. Blessings & Gratitude.
