ANTHONY (TONY) OSIPA 1918 - 2006 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. On Sunday, January 29, 2006, Tony passed away at the Seven Oaks Hospital, leaving behind sons, Wade (Kathy), Robert; daughter Lucille (Tom); his sister Jean; and his grandchildren, Tracy, Jason, Veronica, Andrew, Paul and Adam. He will be lovingly remembered by his family, sisters-in-law, numerous nieces, nephews, friends and coworkers. Tony was predeceased by his parents, Stefan and Anna; his wife Helen, whom he loved dearly; his brothers, Bill, Steven, Joseph, Louis and Peter; and his sisters, Julia and Catherine. Tony was a loving husband, a devoted father, caring son, brother and a special grandfather (GiGi). He was a friendly, generous and outgoing person who had a wide circle of friends. Born on September 27, 1918, he lived his entire life in Winnipeg's North End and finished his schooling at St. John's High School. Tony married his wife Helen Skakun, on July 11, 1942. He was an accomplished and competitive athlete playing baseball, hockey, lacrosse, bowling and golf. Tony excelled in baseball, mostly as a shortstop and played on three provincial championship teams in 1938, 1942 and 1943. But the game he loved most in his middle and later years was golf which he played at the Rossmere Golf for about 25 years until 1996. Throughout his many years in sports he developed lifelong friendships. In his earlier years, Tony worked at various jobs including time in the Empire Gold Mine in Manitoba, which came about when he and a friend jumped a freight train to the mines. He also worked at MacDonald Aircraft before landing a job at CN Railways. There he was hired as a steam engine fireman and worked his way up to become a locomotive engineer. Tony loved his job at the CNR and worked there for over 37 year until his retirement at age 65 on October 1, 1983. Prior to Tony's passing, he resided at the Fred Douglas Lodge on Burrows Avenue. The family would like to thank the staff, residents and volunteers at the Fred Douglas Lodge on Burrows Avenue for their tender care; friendship and help in making Tony's stay a pleasurable experience. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held on Friday, February 3 at 2:00 p.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main St. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Tony's memory to the Alzheimer's Society of Manitoba, 10-120 Donald St., Winnipeg, MB R3C 4G2 or to a charity of choice.
