RACHEL MORRISON LOWTHER January 12 1926 - January 31 2006. It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Rae Lowther who left us peacefully at Grace Hospital on January 31, 2006, at the age of 80 years. Rae was born in Clyde Bank, Scotland, where she attended school and experienced first-hand the ravages of the Second World War. Rae's town and family home were bombed during the blitz and she and her family survived in their backyard bomb shelter. Rae immigrated to Canada with her family in September 1952, settling first in Portage la Prairie, and later in Winnipeg. Prior to moving to Canada, she completed her bachelor of science degree at the University of Glasgow. Later in life, Rae completed her PhD in psychology at the University of Manitoba. Following her psychology studies, Rae worked at the Manitoba Developmental Centre in Portage la Prairie, using her skills to help people with disabilities reach their potential, and improve their quality of life. Rae's memory will be cherished by her family members, including daughter Dale Brownlee; sons, Glen Lowther and Douglas Lowther; son-in-law Rod Brownlee; daughter-in-law Terri Trottershaw; grandchildren, Catriona Lowther, Jamie Brownlee (Salena) and Jason Brownlee (Laura); and great-grandchildren, Austin and Alex. Rae will also be fondly remembered by her former husband and loyal friend Dr. Glen Harrison Lowther, Jean and Bob Brownlee, and Debbie and Gary Bullock and Kendra, Bryce and Greg. Rae's tenacious spirit and warmth touched everyone who knew her. She was generous and kind, and especially caring towards children and those living with disabilities or other life challenges. She will be missed by the many people whose lives she touched. Rae's family would like to express their thanks to the physicians and nurses at Grace Hospital, who assisted her through many illnesses, and who ensured her dignity and comfort at the end. In keeping with Rae's wishes, an informal celebration of Rae's life will be held for family and friends at Thomson Funeral Home, 669 Broadway, Winnipeg on Saturday, February 4 at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Manitoba Developmental Centre, Residence Fund, Box 1190, Portage la Prairie, MB R1N 3C6.
