He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 56 years, Jean; and their three children Gail (Lee) MacLean; Kent (Candy) Cretton and Janet Cretton; three grandsons, Derek and Brent MacLean; Reece Cretton and one granddaughter Megan Cretton. He is also survived by his Aunt Marie (Pierre) Favre in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland, along with cousins in Switzerland and Canada. Gilbert was predeceased by his mother Ida (Corthey) in 1984 and father Maurice in 1967 who came to Canada from Martigny, Switzerland. Gilbert was very proud of his Swiss heritage which he displayed in his fight and determination, his preciseness, positive attitude and the Swiss legacy he instilled in his children. Gilbert was a devoted supportive husband, father and grandfather who always put his family first. His footprint cannot be matched and we will miss him dearly. Gilbert attended school in Sperling and completed his education at St. Boniface College. His love of the land drew him back to the family farm where he became a successful farmer and proud resident of Sperling. Known to many as Gib, the sports enthusiast proved his athletic talent in curling, baseball and hockey, along with the achievement of being the manager of the Sperling Hockey Team who went on to be the Manitoba Junior B Champs. Gib proudly served as Deputy Reeve and Councillor for the R.M. of Morris for 13 years and was involved in many Sperling Community organizations. He was Past Master of the Patricia Lodge #125 and a Khartum Shriner of the King Edward #24 Provost Unit. Gib loved the water and many family vacations were spent at Kenora on Lake of the Woods before their purchase of a summer home at Platford's Landing Clearwater Bay, Ontario. Happy times and memories will be cherished. Gib and Jean's retirement winters were spent in Mesa, Arizona where along with making many lasting friendships, Gib spent countless hours doing what he loved -- playing pool. His family would like to express sincere thanks to the wonderful staff at The Boyne Lodge, Carman Memorial Hospital and Boundary Trails Health Centre for your care, kindness and support extended to Gilbert over the past few years. A private family interment will take place March 4, 2006 at the Sperling Cemetery. The family would like to invite friends to a time of remembrance and lunch at the Sperling Community Hall at 2:00 p.m. on March 4, 2006. Floral tributes are gratefully declined. Memorial donations can be made in Gilbert's memory to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba, Suite 200, 6 Donald St., Winnipeg, MB, R3L 0K6.
