ENA MELNYK September 12, 1913 - February 3, 2006 Passed away peacefully at Holy Family Nursing Home in her 93rd year. Born Eufrozyna Huminilovych in Kalush, Ukraine, Ena arrived in Winnipeg in 1950. Her courage and determination ensured her family's safe escape from Ukraine at the end of the Second World War. Blessed with a fine voice, she enjoyed singing and published a booklet of poems in 1980 titled Blue Daisy. After Ukrainian independence in 1991 she travelled often to visit relatives in Lviv, helping everyone who asked. She was a loving, family-oriented person who gave much of herself for others. She is survived by Denis, her devoted husband of 62 years, her sons, George, author and academic and Lubomyr, composer and pianist, her daughters-in-law, Julia and Lesya and five grandchildren, Adam, Klara, Nadja, Lubomyr and Stephany, her sister Katherine Boyko (Bloomington, IN) and her niece Irene Slysh (Hershey, PA). Irene is eternally grateful to Ena, who looked after her like a mother during the war years and when they came to Canada. Ena is also survived by her nephew Ihor Huminilovych (Ira) and family in Ukraine, including great-niece Khrystyna who moved to Canada recently. Ena was predeceased by her mother Maria (nee Stus), father Ilya, her sister Julia and brother Ivan. She will be missed by all of us. The funeral will be held at Korban Funeral Chapel, 907 Main St. at 1:30 p.m. Friday, February 10. Fr. Mark Gnutel of Holy Family Ukrainian Catholic Church officiating. Interment to follow at Holy Family Cemetery. Special thanks to Dr. Jamie Boyd, her longtime family physician, Holy Family Nursing Home and the staff on Unit 2A who cared for her in her final days. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of your choice. VICHNAYA PAMYAT Where is my carefree childhood? Where is my hopeful motherhood? Where are you my joy and happiness? Woven in a garland of flowers Lying deep in my heart. - Ena Melnyk
