JAMES EMERSON DOWNEY Beloved husband of Betty, father and grand-father, Jim Downey, aged 84, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 7, 2006. James was predeceased by his first wife Isabelle; parents, Wesley and Agnes; brothers, John and Wesley and sister Christina. Lovingly remembered by wife Betty; sons, Terry (Carol), Dennis (Sandi) and Chris (Marion); daughter Ardis (Ron) Nash; stepson Wayne (Sharon) Strong; stepdaughters, Elaine (Chris) Ford and Connie Allsopp; grandchildren, Beau, Caroline, Ryan, Lauren, Kendra, Jennifer (Oliver), Robert (Laura), Jonathan, Matthew, Tyler and Kelsey; sister Florence Yendt; sisters-in-law Bernice Chick and Elva Downey; as well as many nieces and nephews. Jim served in the R.C.A.F. for five years during the Second World War. He retired from the Winnipeg Free Press after 35 years of employment. Jim enjoyed 22 years of retirement, dancing, golfing, painting and walks at Birds Hill Park. Music played an important part in Jim's life, which included playing a variety of instruments and listening to all types of music. He was a kind and gentle man, who will be sadly missed by his family. Thank you to all the staff at the Health Sciences Centre, who cared for Jim during his brief illness. A memorial service will be held at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, February 11, at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue. A reception will follow.
