MARY FALK Mary Falk died peacefully in the early hours of February 8, 2006. Born in Saksagan, Russia on November 2, 1909 she was the first of 6 children of Jabob and Helen Friesen. While growing up in Neu York, Russia she began a life long passion for reading, first in German and then in English - a passion which only ended in the last year of her life due to failing memory. Her family emigrated to Canada, landing in Winnipeg in 1927 where they bought their first Canadian home on Martha Street. The family became active members of Schoenwiese Mennonite Church on Elgin (the forerunner of the First Mennonite Church on Notre Dame) where she met John Peter Falk whom she married in 1942. Together they raised 4 children in the west end of Winnipeg where they lived for the next 45 years. After husband John died on October 29, 1987 she sold the family home in 1991 and moved to the Sunset House seniors home run by her church. In July 2005 she relocated to the West Park Manor Nursing Home. She is predeceased by brothers Jack Friesen of Holland, MB and Peter Friesen of Winnipeg as well as a brother who died as a child in Russia. She is survived by son Richard and wife Grace of Winnipeg, son Herbert of Winnipeg, son Alfred and wife Coleen of Edmonton and daughter Anita Kattner and husband Bob of Kelowna. Also mourning her passing are grandchildren Kelly Falk with wife Tracy, Kimberley Falk, Ryan and Christopher Kattner, David and Steven Falk. Greatgrandson Nicholas Falk will also greatly miss his Oma . Two sisters Helen Braun and Louise Beatty, both of Winnipeg are all that survive of that family that emigrated to Winnipeg long ago. The family would like to thank the staff of West Park Manor Nursing Home. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, February 16, 10:30 a.m. at the First Mennonite Church, 922 Notre Dame with viewing one hour prior to services. Interment at Brookside Cemetery will be followed by a reception in the church basement to celebrate Mary's long and happy life. In lieu of flowers, please donate to Winnipeg Harvest or charity of choice. Thomson Funeral Home 669 Broadway 783-7211

Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • Mrs. Falk and her husband were wonderful parents, very generous with their children. I remember them buying a new car when their boys began university and using the old one themselves. I remember them indulging their children's hobbies such as pigeon raising and motorcycles. I remember the smell of Mrs. Falk's home-baked buns. I remember the sound of her calling her daughter Anita in from play. She was a good woman. - Posted by: Janet Marshall (nee Stanley) (Next door neighbour for 15 years) on: Mar 11, 2012
